This is another one of the areas near Shanghai that was being heavily developed before the pandemic and the real estate crash. But it’s become another victim of the governments lack of planning and responsibility. You will be greeted with a barren landscape of incomplete apartments and infrastructure, a few monolithic buildings like the crowne plaza, floating in a muddy lake of disappointment, and the Maritime Museum, again, isolated, miles from anywhere, full of of impressive propaganda, largely empty and likely to fall into disrepair. The Future Life Experience Centre further, around the lake, is a huge abandoned area, once promising all measure of fun for the imaginary crowds that never existed in the first place, now left to nesting birds and the eerie whistling of the wind through the rusting remnants of steel and concrete, a fitting epitaph of the twilight of another failed Chinese dynasty.

Accessible lake via metro from Shanghai city, nice gateway for an afternoon. You can walk all around the man-made lake crossing some nice bridges. I crossed the lake with my inflatable Stand Up Paddle which I brought with me although conditions were windy and choppy on part of the lake. It was quite fun. The closer you get to the sea the more brown the water is... Currently still many construction sites around the lake but the path to walk is all right. Food stands were present next to metro station. South East of the lake there is a sailing/kayak club.
