Was a little hesitant to pay 40rm to enter an aquarium built in a mall, and only saw families with kids queuing. But a great variety of tanks and fishes were seen, some tanks were big too. Totally worth the money

This is located in The Shore Gallery and is 40 RM per adult and 30 RM for those aged 60 and above. We received free bookmarks as a souvenir. The touch pool is open and there are many exhibits to see. There is also a 3D show and it was much better than expected.

Assalamualaikum & hello. This is something I would like to report/ share.

Last Saturday, me and my family went to Melaka not so latest attraction which is The Shore Oceanarium. I thought of bringing my 2 1/2 year old daughter there since she loves to see fish so much.

My initial assumption was this is going to be a place where all types of animals will be well taken care of, with a perfect habitat artificial habitat & with an aim to educate, not just to make money off of them.

Boy how I thought wrong.

I almost cried when I saw their first and and most famous attraction there; A Blue Spotted Stingray & a school of Bamboo Shark, like 8-10 of them in a “petting pool”. Where you can touch/ lift them up.

Both of them, were placed in a roughly 4x4 round pool, with depth of probably 50cm max. The stingray was all alone, yet the sharks were all cramped in their own small pool, swimming non-stop for 24hours a day.

I asked the patron if they will be transferred to a bigger aquarium at the end of each day, she gave me a simple “Nope”. Means that for the past months, or maybe years if they don’t die easily due to stress, they are in that tiny pool the whole time, with no shelters & place to hide. Simply swimming non-stop, 24/7. For the sake of entertainment.

The horror didn’t stop there. I walked further in, to see an aquarium filled with Clown Fish (Nemos), but without a proper anemones to fit as a home for them. Hence, they all float aimlessly and with hardship, as I know they’re not biologically built to swim/ float for too long. They’re by nature need to be symbiotically living with anemones or their life will fall short.

They have Morrays, Puffers, Boxfish, and just simply display them as it is. No corals, no crevasses, no dark corners to hide, to live. Just like displaying a sculpture.

They also have this one species of fish that lives in the dark water of caves (in China if I’m not mistaken). Since cave dwellers don’t need lights/ sights to see, this fish has evolved to be without eyes/ blind. But apparently Oceanarium don’t understand how biology/ science works. They display these fishes under bright light, 24hrs a day. I wonder how disoriented these fishes might be.

They displayed seahorses with PLASTIC corals & plants. NOTHING ELSE. So these seahorses were hanging and simply staying alive without even knowing they deserve better.

This place, Oceanarium offers you no education whatsoever. They don’t even care to learn how different species live, their habitat preference, and how much space/ lights needed for each different species.

I’m posting this here to let others know this is wrong, and if someone out there know what can be done & how,

Please do something.

I had read both the excellent and the dismal reviews before making my way here, and I'm glad I decided to judge the place for myself. I thought the place was excellent for a mini aquarium. I don't know what the expectations are of those who wrote poor reviews, this place does not hold itself out to be an international-class underwater world or theme park, like the Sea World in Orlando, the Ocean Park in Hong Kong or the mammoth aquariums in California, Japan, Singapore and Perth. That is pretty obvious by the fact that this place is inside a mall. There are no outdoor areas nor any seals, dolphins, whales, penguins, walruses, train rides or roller coasters. So reset your expectations and enjoy the place for what it is. It is a well-organised and well-maintained mini attraction, and gives you a sufficient taste of marine life. The management has done its best considering the constraints. No exciting or thrilling games or animal shows but an impressive array of sea creatures on live display in tanks.

You first start at the touch pool, where you can touch the star fish and the stingrays. Once done with that, you then move on to the main part of the aquarium and find the answers to the quiz as you go along. Don't get too consumed by the questions or you will miss out on the overall experience. We were lucky to be able to see a diver feed the fish in the tank opposite the 3D mini theatre, we went at around 3.30pm on a Saturday. The whole family also enjoyed the simple 3D animation movie, and the special effects.

Last stop before the exit was the turtles. About 5 to 6 large ones in a pool. Kids enjoyed feeding the turtles, to do that you have to buy a small tub of raw fish when you buy the tickets, priced at RM10.60 per small tub. Expensive but I suppose they need to feed the right kind of food to the turtles.

We spent about an hour there all in all, and thought it was an afternoon well-spent. Loved seeing and learning about the fish, crabs, eels, sharks, seahorses, jelly fish and coral. Bought a couple of souvenirs, collected our small gifts for the quiz and left satisfied.

Located inside the mall, this aquarium is pretty small, but still house quite an extensive variety of sea creatures. There's even a small touch pool with starfish, sea cucumbers, stingrays(??) and other sea creatures safe for children to pet.

We went to The Shore shopping complex in Malacca city after dinner. We were delighted to find that there is an Oceanarium in this shopping complex. Without hesitation, we bought tickets and went in to explore! And of course we bought the 3D goggles hoping to enjoy seeing ocean creatures swimming around us! It was RM 5 per pair.
Alas, the 3D is only for certain information board display and a few minutes documentary! We were laughing to ourselves why we bought 3. In fact just buy one and share among three of us will suffice.
Honestly I would say it was not bad compared to the Undersea World in Sentosa, Singapore. It is only smaller than the Aquarium in Singapore.
At the entrance, we were given a form to chop at certain junctions of the aquarium with yes and no questions asked. It was not bad an idea especially for school children. I also found it amusing and informative! At the end, a gift will be given at the counter after completing all the questionnaires correctly. Sounds good! Actually there are a lot of sea creatures we have not come across or heard before! It’s really amazing to watch these rare sea creatures.
FYI, the entrance fee is RM 28 for adults, RM 15 for children, RM 18 for senior citizens.

I only found out about this sea aquarium at a Thai Massage place which has a 20% discount coupon on the counter. This is at The Shore which is about 10-15min drive from Jonker Street. Ticket was RM30 for adult and RM20 for kids and it comes with magnet and 3D glasses and worksheet for the kids. The area was not big but is was good fun for the kid and my boy was going round looking for the answer on the worksheet. They had some nice species of fishes and took about 45mins for the visit. We exchanged the completed worksheet for a keychain which was nice. The aquarium could have more jelly fish as currently only have one tank. My boy had fun on this tour.

Able to view many types of fish and sea creatures.

Petting area was interesting.

Suggest to allocate around 2 hours for this attraction.

Interesting Quiz to keep you engaged in the information displays; and be rewarded with a gift if you are able to answer all correctly.

Remember to bring along Mykid/Passport for kids below 3 year old; for free entry verification.
