Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Bastion Middelburg is a bastion and part of the fortifications built by the Dutch when they ruled this part of Malaysia. It certainly looks like a bastion, although the walls are all gone so it just kind of sits there on it’s on. There are some small cannons on the ramparts, just to complete the look. It’s not a major thing to see, more of a landmark and it’s right next to Dutch Square. It’s kind of fun to take a look at night too, because it’s lit up then.

Middleburg Bastion is located in front of the Red Church and next to the sultanate's wood waterwheel.
There are some cannons facing the Melaka River where we can see the Melaka river from the Middleburg Bastion wall. Small place to visit but nice,it will not take long, before going to Jongker Street.

This is a nicely reproduced mini structure to illustrate Dutch fortifications in Malacca. Nice for taking a few pictures since this is in a central location.

After the fall of Melaka from the Portuguese to the Dutch new measures were taken to ensure the safety of Melaka. The Dutch fortified the walls of Melaka city, which further strengthened the existing city’s defences left by the Portuguese. The fortification of the city’s walls involved the building of a bastion or control tower strategically located at the mouth of Melaka River, the focal point for trade and stopover for international ships. The building of a bastion, known as Middleburg was carried out by the Dutch in 1660. This new control tower added to the existing bastions of Melaka city to nine. The defences of the city became strengthened with this new bastion as it regulated the area surrounding Melaka River, busy with shipping and trading activities at the time. The existing defence system with bastion provided cannon support to the military. It proved a vital factor in overcoming unseen threats.

Along with the Santiago Gate this is the only remaining part of the former Fortress in Melaka. It is close to Dutch Square and overlooks the river. It was discovered in 2006 and has since undergone heavy reconstruction. It almost looks brand new. Signs on the outer walls show the Dutch and Portuguese layers of brickwork. It was originally built in the 1660's. Some may think the restoration is a bit heavy handed. There is tourist information right next to the site.

This is all that is left of the Dutch fort built during their occupation. There are some Portuguese parts that are also visible. The cannons there are from the Dutch East India Company era.

If you are walking around in Melaka, this is next to the bridge at the end of Jonker street. Recreation of the battlements illustrating the original construction and additions done to further strengthen the walls. Directly opposite the red square.

This is a neat reconstructed part of the fort that sits on the banks of the Malacca River. It has a few old Dutch cannons in place. The site is clean , well maintained and sometimes quite busy. You have to climb some steps to get in!

Beautiful old Dutch Fort dating from the 1660's and one of my favourite things to see in Melaka. This is because it is a real piece of history. Melaka was a really important place back in these times, due mainly to its trade in Spices. Thus the city needed protection, hence this impressive red bricked fort. Most of it id gone now but this impressive bastion remains with its thick walls. It is a very peaceful place, most tourists stay on Jonkers and around Red Square or up on St Paul';s Hill. This place won't take you long to see and it would be a real pity to miss it, especially if you are interested in history.
