The refuge is quite extensive with several unconnected units which can be accessed. Don't miss the visitor center and the observation building. The latter must be one of the largest in the country.

It's a quiet and peaceful place. Family friendly. There is a 10 minute film that is very good as an orientation. There is no admission fee.

The staff does a wonderful job sharing stories of interest about wildlife. Also pointed us to a wonderful price for admittance to all national parks for seniors.

Spent the morning watching SandHill and Whooping Cranes along with a variety of duck species. Wonderful venue and many nice trails nearby.

Even before you enter the welcome center, you see paths which lead into the refuge, just begging for you to take them. Inside the center, you will see a number of interesting displays which teaches the ecosystem. A video presentation is quite informative. Just a short walk to the observation building where, under the cover and silence of the building,... More

My husband had visited before and knew I'd love the refuge and he was correct. The nature center is enjoyable although one exhibit was difficult to see details because the lights were so bright. The tv loop with the interview was fun to watch. Absolutely adored the birding observation building. There were many people there that made it a regular... More

Sand hill cranes and a few whooping cranes mixed in. Can't miss them. You can hear and see them from the visitor center.

We were happy to stumble onto this beautify bird refuge. Over 700 Heron were hanging out and the it's easy to take the short walk to the inside heated/cooled observation area. Great to visit and it's free.

Seeing the Whopping Cranes is an experience of a lifetime. December through January is the best time. Their numbers that arrive at Wheeler vary each year. We have been twice this season and in December we saw 7 and in January we saw only 1. However, the Sandhill Cranes were in abundance and are a treat to view. They are... More

If you are a bird enthusiast, you will be in heaven. Whooping cranes, Sand Hill cranes, ducks, geese, egrets, herons. They love this place. 19,000 Sand Hill Cranes this year. We also have osprey, eagles, hawks, owls. Great viewing centers!
