The Workshop/Museum Francisco Brennand (FB) is located about 40 minutes by car, west of Recife, in a natural wooden tropical area. It is accessible by a winding , non-paved road from the main highway. A leisurely drive therefore permits visitors to experience the peaceful environment, see multi-colored birds flying around as well as the odd spider creeping around the side of the road. The FB workshop and ceramics entreprise arose, from 1971 on, from the ruins of an old brick factory owned by FB's father. Today, the visitor can see about 3200 pieces of art, including sculptures, ceramics, vases. mosaics of all sizes as well as a small number of paintings and black and white drawings ranging from 1949 to 2014. All of these are located in 4 different buildings scattered throughout the park as well as outside. The management of the museum is in the process of setting up an institute dedicated to a detailed cataloging of FB's entire work. Brennand's family was very rich: this certainly facilitated the young Brennand's travels to France and subsequently his total dedication to his art. What is displayed reflects, without any doubt, FB's obsession with human reproduction and the male/female organs that make it possible. The genius of Brennand, however, can be found in the way his boundless imagination, creativity and oniric visions represent buttocks, breasts, vaginas, penises, as parts of human and animal - geese, toucans, pelicans, crocodiles, and snakes - bodies in various sexual positions. In addition, his focus on fecundity is exemplified by the production of eggs of all sizes scattered throughout the estate. Overall, to visit the Brennand museum is to witness the unique surrealism of a body of work that some might see bordering on pornographic, notwithstanding the availability of numerous mosaic murals of exquisite quality. This overt sexuality is, in my opinion, not objectionable in the least, as it is an integral part of the artist's vision., and not a gratuitous exhibition of sexual organs.…

I was really impressed by the collection. This guy is prolific and the place is beautiful. I didn’t know what to expect, since I was not much into ceramics, and after visiting, I am a big fan.

My expectation was high and I have to admit to be a little disappointed, but still consider it worth the visit even if it takes some 45 min from Boa viagem or Olinda to get there (and again back). The site is really amazing with this combination of art, industrial heritage and nature. We had lunch at the restaurant. Up to standard but freezing due to the airco.…

Whether you like ceramics or not, this atelier is simply superb! For a few decades Brennand has produced the most beautiful, creative and inspiring pieces of ceramics. Together with Inhotin in Minas Gerais, the two best places in Brazil for the art lover. Don´t miss it.
