The academy was formally established by Lady Ranu Mukherjee during the 1930s. Famous paintings of Gaganendra Nath Tagore, Jamini Roy and other eminent artists are exhibited here. Besides the theatrical auditorium is also a spot of attraction for the performers as well as the avid viewers. The main attraction nowadays is the annual theatre festival here.

The place has few galleries that host many art exhibitions. The layout or the design of the galleries is nothing to speak about. So it all depends upon the quality of the exhibits. The place is located in a prominent place but is constrained of space around it. The outside does not offer anything great either.

Well, I am talking about the auditorium of the Academy of fine Arts, Kolkata which is the mecca of Bengali theater. It is pathetic to see the complete negligence of the authorities concerned towards maintenance and upkeep of this place. For the last 20 years there has not been any change. When I see this in comparison with auditoriums in... More

this is at the centre of the city. the area is lovely as it is on the borders of the maidan. here what happens inside is more important. it is always full with the intellectually dominant sections.

Presently only the downstairs is open and features a monthly schedule of different exhibitions. When we visited the temporary displays featured artists from other northern states, particularly Assam with some great modern art. Without doubt the most interesting aspect was to be able to discuss with the Artists themselves what it's like trying to make it as an artist in... More

The academy was formally established in 1933 by Lady ranu mukherje. It was in a room loaned by the Indian Museum. In the 1950s, Lady Ranu Mookerjee and patronage by B C ROY Chief Minister of West Bengal the academy was shifted to a very large place in the Cathedral Road, just beside St Paul’s cathedral. There are some famous... More
