Had heard a lot about it and so was excited to visit it, but it didn't lived up to the expectations. Zoo is very mismanaged, no proper indications for directions and not sequentially arranged. Aviary is not good very less variety of birds, in reptile section most of the cages were empty. Animals were not well fed..no lion(only one lioness), no wolf, porcupine or apes(other than one chimpanzee). People were sitting on ground and eating food, littering garbage here and there.
Can give it a miss if its not your first zoo visit.

The zoo inhabitants couldn't have been better lived than here. It feels like inhabitants' home. A two hours treat feels like life is beautiful in nature.
Nature that has left us to live on each other but the enormous human love and care has shaken the almighty too.

The enclosures of many animals are to small compared to the number kept inside them. Further most enclosures are not reflecting the natural habitats of the animals. It would be better to reduce the type the animals and increase the size of the individual enclosures and their furnishing. This zoo does not seem to meet any best practices supposed to be followed. Further, the it looks untidy and not inviting, to have pleasant environment a lot investments and efforts need to be made.

I booked ticket online on 13 Oct 20(offline also available now) and visited the place as Being frequent visitor of Kolkata since childhood, I couldn't make it.
Giant trees with name board punched and free local birds make this place really enjoyable for a nature lover.
Some of the species(e.g Jaguar and others) now not available.
A large area to enjoy weekend with your family.

Went with four children 11-14 years old. We could go around the whole zoo in about 3 hours. The enclosures were quite nice and the animals well looked after it seemed. Some have glass walls so you get a good view. The weather was not very hot so there was some comfort in the shady parts. Otherwise, it just about stretched the endurance of the troupe. Adequate places to buy water and refreshments are there inside the Zoo. Overall a pleasant experience.

A good collection of wild life animals which are commonly not seen by common peoples. Must visit if you love and want to take care of them. Because your visit encourages Government for their betterment.

Not wide range of animals. At that point of time very few species of monkey available. Couldn't find giraffe. Visitors are freely allowed to make picnic. That was quite unusual for a reputed zoo.

This is one of the oldest zoo of our country. You can see animals from different parts of India. Tiger is the biggest attraction of this zoo.

The Alipore zoo is in alipure, nearby the National library. The premises is wide enough. Good option for getaway with kids. However, the animal count and health is not satisfactory if you have visited other zoos. Entry coupon to be bought before entering the zoo.

I have been to the Kolkata Zoo , innumerable times, since my childhood and for the last few years the only sign that were present were utter apathy by the Zoo officials and all staff in general. It was also planned by the last Govt of West Bengal to shift the Zoo from its current location to a far and distant place, where we won't be able to go,rest along , have fun and let the kids enjoy !! Sheer callousness and business-sense as regards to rising property price were the main reason for that erstwhile plan!!
Anyway, its said that all's well that end's well, and thus at the end,the Govt changed, better sense prevailed and the Zoo , which is the oldest in Asia, remained at the place where we have seen it since our childhood. But the animals were not fed well, probably not daily, the look of the animals told a tale of utter misery for them and total neglect !! Last time we, as a family, went to Kolkata Zoological Garden, at Alipur, was more than a year back.

Times have changed, management have changed and Kolkata Zoo is gradually coming up like I've never ever seen before. All kudos to the current Govt and the present Zoo authority !!

Today being a Sunday, I took my nephew there , as promised to him earlier, and a smile remained on our faces throughout our time spent there.

Firstly, the new Automated entrance is quick and working!! The private security personnels are always on their toes and they look and mean business. Entry fee per person is Rs 20/-,its needed if one is more than two years old.Timings are 9am to 5pm, except all Thursdays.

All the paths inside the Zoo are clean and well kept. Earlier old leaves, dust and rubbish were strewn here and there. The enclosure walls are freshly painted and almost all were in shape. All the trees inside the Zoo premises looked freshly cut and neat. The huge lake inside looked absolutely clean with not a single leaf on the water. Earlier it was full of foliage and the borders of the lake was full of bird-droppings.

The animals looked fairly fed, except a really old looking, almost bald Lion near the Hippo enclosure. Fresh foods could be seen in almost all the enclosures. Earlier it was alleged that food of the animals were stolen by the staff and sold outside !! Didn't look like that was happening now.

The Zoo has a new Aviary now full of spoonbills , pelicans etc and a spanking new Glass enclosure for Tigers !! Both the enclosures looked fine and well maintained although they were only few days old ! Lets hope they will remain as such.
Toilets are very clean too, unbelievable !!

Few stupid persons were seen as usual crossing the protective fence around the deer enclosures, trying the feed the animals from their hands ! Myself alerted a security personnel who rushed there.

The only thing still missing for a long time is the Reptile House. Don't really know why it has shut shop and yet to open for more than a year. Even the famed Burdwan house, place for the Big Cats have closed down - why on Earth ?

Few pointers to the Zoo authorities, if they read this :
1) Increase security personnel and train them to protect the animals.
2) Increase the number of animals - where are the Rhinos, Reptiles, camels,Kangaroos, Giant tortoises, Gorillas ?
3) Try to put more tigers in the glass enclosure
4) Stop people from sitting on the lawn and having food like this the Maidan !
5) Start the Zoo timing from 7am !! Whats the harm ??! Is this a 9am-5pm office ??!!

Overall, a must visit place now ,in Kolkata and great improvement seen everywhere, since our last visit. Well done, the management.
