This Bhuddist Monastery built over 150 years ago is special to visit even for non Bhuddist. The Bhuddist statue inside and the artwork is of a special variety and it is very peaceful although you would need a driver to get you there as it is a bit off the main road.

Coming down from our Tiger Hill trip, we were very pleasantly surprised to get to this place. It's hidden up a backstreet where there are very, very few passing places.
A totally serene and peaceful place, there is a workshop to the right where cups for candles are filled. There is an incredible amount of history here but the whole place is adorned with colourful depictions of myths and stories from Indian Buddhist Religion. Well worth a visit!!

Yiga Choeling Gompa, the Darjeeling area's most famous monastery, founded in 1850, houses up to 40 monks of the Gelugpa school. The serene temple has wonderful old murals and enshrines a 5m-high statue of Jampa (Maitreya; ‘Future Buddha’) and 300 beautifully bound Tibetan texts. It's on the western edge of Ghum, 6km south of Darjeeling: from Ghum station, walk 100m west along the main road towards Darjeeling, turn left at the sign for the monastery and go 600m.

If you are on holiday here and interested in the Buddhist faith then this monastery is well worth a visit. It is one of the few where you can take photos inside, if you buy a permit. Well worth the 100 rupee charge.
Inside you can see hundreds of tantras in painted cases, wonderful statues and amazing wall art.
This is definitely a working monastery, you may well get the chance to talk to some of the monks.
Great prayer wheels too. Remember to go clockwise!

Its one of the Oldest Monastery in Darjeeling. But if you are travelling from Sikkim (Namchi and Peeling) you may not feel to visit the monastery. This monastery is not maintained very well. It has less facillities for the travellers. Washrooms are the worst.

The Yiga Choeling Monastery is perhaps the oldest monastry in Darjeeling. It is located close to the Ghoom Railway Station and not many tourists go here. When we went it was open. The interior main hall is very peaceful and serene. The main feature is a dominating statue of Maitreya or the Future Buddha. The walls also had interesting paintings.
