Top ways to experience Besant Nagar Beach and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Besant Nagar
Named after the noted lady theosophist Annie Besant, Besant Nagar is one of the most preferred areas to reside in Chennai due to the presence of the beach. The extremely calm and serene area with its colonial hangover is studded with sea- facing homes owned by the affluent families and has a string of restaurants, cafes, shops and boutiques around it. Home to Elliot’s Beach, The Theosophical Society and Kalakshetra, the world famous dance school along with beautiful temples and churches, this is where Chennai loves to chill. The confluence of best of nature, art and history within the greenest parts of the city limits is evident in the culture of this neighbourhood, which makes it one of the most favourite hangout zones for all the locals.

Elliot’s Beach is a famous place to visit with friends or family. A pleasant and neat place for families and kids. This location is always crowded in the evening and weekends. Lots of food options as well starting from street food to branded food shops. Evening time is the best time for all to enjoy this place.

Also known as Elliot Beach but since it's near the residential area of Besant Nagar, it is also called Besant Nagar Beach.

It is accessible by private and public transport but private vehicle is advisable as there is good parking fascility (weekends it's very crowded).
There lot of accommodation options nearby the beach.

There is a famous Church Annai Velankanni Shrine and Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple. Temple is very crowded on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The famous broken bridge is also nearby this beach which is worth a visit only during daylight as it is not safe in the dark

The beach is very clean and well maintained, it is very safe as well. Best time to visit would be either evening or early sunrise.

There are many activities to do such as skating, merry go round, shooting the balloons. Eateries like Murugan Idli, KFC, Wow Momo, etc

It is one of the more cleaner beaches in Chennai. The stalls are on the beach spreading dirt and waste produced is spread on the beach. The people throw the paper wrappers etc on the pavements, roads inspite of dustbins placed for the same.
Most of the cafes in and around the beach are very small.

This is the best beach within the city of Chennai (far better than Marina). Beach is clean enough to take a stroll in the evening (but not worth bathing). Also, there are lots of restaurants in the vicinity of beach.

Enjoy an afternoon and catch the life of locals. Watch how fishermen bring and sell fresh seafood. See and talk with families having a day off. Enjouy this typical local scene during sun set.

We have visited this beach N no of times and it's our go to place. It's beautiful and clean. Kids can freely play around. They have a huge giant wheel and few games for kids and families.
You get corn, sonpapdi and other yummy treats. It's definitely a must visit place to unwind and relax.

I wanted to find the cleanest beach in Chennai and read online about this beach and went there. I was so disappointed. It was so dirty and deserted beach. Rubbish everywhere, plastic bags, bottles, food waste, plates, cups, locals cleaning the fish and dumping fish guts on the beach. It was filthy. Sad to see that see was washing all rubbish in to the sea. I could see plastic bags floating in the water. Sad….

The Elliott's beach or popularly known as Besant Nagar beach is a pretty clean beach to visit. Evenings are quite good with a gentle breeze blowing and no sun (unlike Goa, etc.) as Chennai faces the east. Pakodas and spring potato and chat items are available in plenty and are ok. Water is a bit deep so do not venture inside the sea.
