If you are looking to soak in the culture of Chennai, the Mylapore Tank and Mandavali area should be at the top of your list. One of the oldest residential parts of Chennai, the tank is a part of the seventh century Kapaleeshwarar Temple. This is also the place where the famous Tamil poet, Thiruvalluvar, was born. If you are spending a few days in Chennai, you will understand the importance of this state figure from the number of references made in signs, names of shops and statues. The quintessential travel phrase, "overwhelming sights, sounds, smells," fits perfectly in this area. The narrow streets around the temple are buzzing with activities. Flower sellers, archaic shops selling temple offering ingredients and such line the roads leading to the temple. A photographer’s dream, this place is best explored in the morning, the chosen time to pay homage at the temple.

There's something surreal about the streets of Mylapore near Tank. Kapaleswarar temple, Velliswarar temple have amazing architecture and give you a sense of calmness. The narrow seats crowded with food joints - Karpagambal mess, Saravana Bhavan, Sangeeta and so many shops selling knick knacks. Mylapore is a must visit in chennai to sample what an agraharam will be like!

Mylapore seems to be a great area to visit for local shopping. Be it the temple, utensil shopping or authentic local cousine. All available at walking distance

This is a famous locality in Chennai but is also congested, chaotic and high prices (real estate). Some temples are a draw to the public, and some areas are clean as the rich reside here. But theres not much else here thats unique. I dont recommend an expensive guided tour of this ordinary place.

Mylapore is the cultural capital of Chennai. We can still see old bungalows, music sabhas, temples, samskrit college, vivekananda college. Ramakrishna Math is also here. Very nice place in Chennai.

Very disappointed after reading the other reviews on here. Temple is OK, but not open till 4.30pm. Not much around the place, few stalls to look at but time will be better spent elsewhere

During our holidays in Chennai, we had stayed in a hotel in Mylapore which is an old traditional cultural hub of modern Chennai metropolis. Mylapore is dotted with temples like the popular Kapileshwar temple, Sai Baba temple, beautiful Ramkrishna Mutt and other tourist destinations easily accessible from here are Saint Thomas church, Marina beach, Vivekananda House etc. There are many...
