It was another Sunday of exploration when I had a brush with Mumbai's history of yore when we decided to visit the Sion Fort this morning. Located on a conical hillock in the bustling residential area of Sion, very close to the Eastern Express Highway, the fort is not visible from the road. As we climbed up the steps of Nehru Udyan, a beautifully laid out garden, we found that Rotary Club of Sion was organizing a drawing/painting contest for the children of the nearby schools.
On climbing a little further, the small yet imposing fort came into the view. A pathway and a flight of steps took us to the top of the fort. The fort is today in a state of dilapidation though some restoration work has been carried out by ASI in recent years. To my surprise there was no litter and the general upkeep was good.
It really amazes me that majority of the Mumbaikars are not even aware of the existence of some interesting historical structures sitting right within the city limits. The Sion Fort was built sometime in the late 17th century and is nearly 340 years old. It was built in the era when Bombay was a group of seven islands and this Fort was built on the Parel Island at the boundary to serve as an outpost and watch tower for the British. A creek separated it from the Salsette island that was under the control of the Portuguese. There are two versions about this Fort. One version says that it was built by the British Governor of Bombay while according to another it was built by Portuguese and was later gifted to British who strengthened it further. From the top of the Fort one gets a panoramic view of the city. A solitary canon lying in a state of neglect is a small reminder that this Fort was once inhabited by the British soldiers. There is a water tank on the way to the top and it is believed that there was once a tunnel that connected to another nearby fort.

A small lung of green and peace in heart of Mumbai.
The fort on the hillock is definitely worth a few hours spent there.
Of course, its in a state o disrepair, a centuries old cannon just lying in the dirt, graffiti all over.
But still a could see spot too.
Bit of walking uphill, also carry your water along.

Sion Fort is an old fort built in 1600s. There are stairs to climb all the way up. These stairs are gentle on your knees so pretty much every body can go up. The vire from the fort is wonderful.

"PEACE... It doesn't mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hardwork. It means to be in midst of those things and still be calm in your heart..." - (Unknown)
Sion fort, a historic ruin, is a collection of broken fort fence, walls and rooms with sky ceiling.
Despite being situated in the middle of the city, it is calm and peaceful. Once you reach the top, you get to see a panorama view of the city and if the weather is clear, you might see Sea Link too. Apart from young couples flooding the place, you would find very few people there.
Things to do:
Sit on the walls, relax.... watch birds flying overhead or see the city moving.... Listen to the wind or ponder upon your thoughts....
If bored, try reading love messages scribbled on the walls ( At fort's feet is the Mumbai office of Archeological Survey of India ).
So, I would suggest that, if you are in Sion, and are done with eating Chole Samosa and Gulab jamun at Gurukripa, and have no plans, then you could visit this fort...
or else, just give it a visit... You will feel great...
Recommend to go during monsoons and not to go in summers...
Have fun!!!...😊

I've been to this place multiple times and am simply amazed at how unknown this place is. It has ruins of a fort, a maze, a fountain, a garden and an absolutely stunning view of the city with a good history behind it. Given that Mumbai in general is not a very touristy place, this is definitely a gem worth visiting
This place has a lot of college crowds that flock it everyday, a few of whom are not the most civil. But the place is completely safe and also has police patrolling its grounds. I'd recommend visiting it!

It’s a beautiful place when you compare with the busy life of Mumbai. It’s at the walkable distance from the bus stands or the main highway. One needs to climb some 200 steps to reach at the top the pick of the fort. There are certain remains of the fort at this place. There is a beautiful small garden well maintained there. At the same time one of the most beautiful thing is to get the complete Mumbai view , rather the city view from the top. I ’m sure you’d enjoy some precious moments in silence with your loved ones to cherish when you visit this place. One word of caution, be careful when you walk through the remains of the fort because it’s open at many places and you may fall down from 3 mts height or so.Enjoy.

Sion fort is not much of a fort, only a few ruins left. One has to climb a few steps to reach the top. There is nothing much, a so called garden where you will see kids playing. But decent spot to catch the sunrise
