We only did a part of the Shimla Heritage Walk; from Christ Church to the General Post Office building. We passed the Gaiety Theatre complex, the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation offices and Scandal Point. It was a brilliant walk because there was so much to see and there were information boards along the way to fill us in on both the history of Shimla and of some of the buildings along the way. Well worth doing.

Packed with history and architecture and enlivened by delightful anecdotes and shopping, this walk is designed to provide you with a distilled experience of Shimla. Start from top of Mount Jakhoo, the hill that towers over Shimla at 2455 Mts. A temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman crowns the forested hill. After spending some curious moments with the monkeys that crowd the temple, a sharp descent brings one on the famous Mall, a walking promenade that offers some exquisite samples of colonial architecture as well as a plethora of shopping options. Walk down the western end of the Mall to the Chourda maidan through some historic buildings of the Raj Era, such as the neo-tudor building of The State Bank of India and the unusual cast iron and steel structure that once held the offices of the Railway Board and Department of Commerce. Adjoining it lies the Gorton Castle, in neo-gothic splendour, the one-time Secretariat of the Government of India. The walk continues to the State Museum perched on Inverarm hill, a display of Himachal’s heritage, culture and history. After a tour of the artifacts on display, continue towards former Viceregal Lodge atop Shimla’s Observatory Hill. Even today, colonial grandeur and nostalgia for a long-gone way of life can be experienced here in a single morning. Built on the ripples of Shimla’s western arm, this was the official residence of the British Viceroy of India. After a tour of the imposing interiors and the expansive lawns of the Lodge, the walk ends.

I had been to Shimla on 10th of April 2015. Before my trip, I had checked many online posts about the distance, places to visit, etc. But the kind of information which I was looking for was not available. So, probably, this post may help many travelers.
1. The distance between Chandigarh and Shimla is around 120 Kms. (Shimla to Kandaghat is 90 Kms and from Kandaghat to Shimla 30). The time taken to cover this distance is around 3 and half hours (in Innova Car)
2. The road has many curves. However the roads are quite wide and well laid. No problems with the travelling.
3. There are many eating places. The famous one is Haveli.
4. There is not much to see in Shimla apart from the scenic views and snow. So, any of you planning for Shimla visit during April – May, may kindly look for alternative destination. One can choose to visit Manali directly, instead of visiting Shimla. Especially those who are going from South India needn’t see Institute of Advanced Studies, Museum, temple etc. Not worth the efforts.
5. If you are still interested to visit Shimla in April and want to see snow, you can visit Narkanda. But the approach road to the snow point is very steep and dangerous (around 5 kms is deadly). Narkanda is around 2 hours drive from Shimla.
6. Shimla is very congested and it resembles Yercaud, Madikeri, Ooty, etc. There is nothing much to see there.
7. Don’t go to south Indian restaurants. They won’t offer the typical south Indian food. Instead you can choose to eat in the local hotels like Haveli.

I visited Solan valley in December with my friend, after a long wait. I always wished to take a tour of Himachal Pradesh once, Kinnaur preferably, but took to Solan-Shimla for the start. At first we didn't plan to take any package from any company & went on our own. but the weather took a toll on us & we ended up staying in hotel room for the first 2 days. Cuz we had no plan in place for the abnormalities. Third day when the weather seamed pretty clear, we travelled to shimla (from solan) via bus. *Not a great experience i'd say* Reached Shimla in about 2 hours & found the closed Church (due to snow). It was a near bad experience till we finally decided to hire a guide & atleast discover the place around. The first google search mentioned Thrillophilia & we ended up booking a full day heritage walk at shimla with Thrillophilia. It was an informative tour (not so expensive) which atleast didn't let my trip go waste. Though i could have utilized it more if i had booked it earlier.
Well, lesson learnt! I'd rather look for a planned outing next time. Thanks to The Heritage Walk which managed to light me up last time!

Come June 2014 and we set on a trip to shimla manali rohtang and kufri naldera. Which turned to be a bad choice. These places are namesake for hill station. Hardly any respite from heat as temp ranges from 35 to 39°C and then the straight hirise roads to cover with barefoot abd no public transport these places became a nightmare to be at a hill station rather a sucide attempt if ur with a family and small kids. Though i shimla u may find baby carrying trolly but in manali there ia no such help. The poarters charges 100 rs per hour for this vehicular assistance and to add that you have to drag the kids trolly at your own. Carrying luggage to hotels at mall road in both shimla and manali ia not easy it becomes very cumbersome if ur hotel is at some height. I choose moubtaintop hotel at manali from travel websote and that turned to be a nightmare. As the taxi 3 wheeler took 100 per round sibgle side from mall road manali to hotel and so for down trip thus its bad to choose hotel at height in manali. Similarly in Shimla too. Hotels are at gr8 heights and there is no facality to reach there. The municipal corporation runs a Lift @10 rs per person with exrra charges for luggage ans still u will have to pay some extra buks to a poarter who carry it on his back to hotels. The hotels are overprised in boyh shimla and manali. The HPTDC run tour to nearby places like kufri naldera and chail. Both are bad choices as they just through u out at these places and u get no assistance of guide. And they charge RS 270 per head. There are water amusement parks at kufrri but you are tied to the bus schedule and placed very far in up hills near a natural park forced to visit there as there is no other activity. As such ib overall its a bad choice if u wish to come on vacations on a hill station running away from scroatching heat. However one more thing if you are at your own n first timer to visit theae places tip is obe should be ready to pay extra for traveling and carring fright for luggage. Further it takes arnd aprox 10 hours to reach manali by road from shimla and u need a whole day for travelling. I suggest that Mt. ABU in rajasthan or Oty are much better choices to travel instead.though i dont wish to dishearten any of u reader but for me this is a NO NO place to go u future even in winters when the area us snow covered. I would suggest that Jammu & kashmir is much better option to visit any tume than Himachal. Hope this would help you.

Quite a few things to see and take in during this walk which terminates on The Mall. There are some spectacular views too of the surrounding peaks, ridges and valleys.
The first half of the walk is a steep incline so if you're significantly out of shape you may find it hard going. Plenty of places to stop at though and purchase food and souvenirs from.
There are some signs/plaques that point out certain places of importance, but most of these seem to do with civil service jobs.
Definitely something to do if you're in Shimla, but could do with including a bit more of the history of Shimla and perhaps being more inclusive of all aspects of the area.

Heritage walk of Shimla is incomplete without U.S.Club which is just 10 minutes walk from the Mall. This heritage building has played many roles in British India. The most remarkable was that the last meeting of Sir Radcliff Boundary Commission was held here to decide boundaries between India and Pakistan. The commission had four other members- two Muslims, one Hindu and one Sikh. The members could not decide conclusively and then during a photo session at US Club, Mr. Radcliff took it upon himself to draw the boundary. Rest is history. A plaque outside the building mentions that one of the British draftsmen working on boundary map was so sad on partition issue that he used to drink in the evenings and weep loudly. And no heritage talk of Shimla is complete without ghost stories.

I have planned to visit Shimla in one week. May I know whom should I contact for the Heritage Walk? Please tell me whom can I contact as I am very much interested in taking a walk.

Our guide was Mr Raj Bhasin. He is a resident of Shimla and a very pleasant man. He is an author and has an immense knowledge of his subject. He is a very interesting and articulate man and made our day in Shimla very enjoyable and one we will never forget. I am sure you will be able to contact him via the Internet.

I assume that by "safe" you are referring to the snow reference in my comments. The travel books we looked at suggest that, as a mountainous area, the risk of snow is mainly from November to April, but that is statewide rather than just Shimla.
Our experience of the snow was only a problem for twenty four hours. It may be best for you to try and obtain a local weather forecast for the days of your visit to be on the safe side.

I will be visiting Shimla for the first time early next month. May I know how long would it take to complete the Shimla Heritage Walk at an easy-going pace? Secondly, what weather condition can I expect and suitable attire suggestion? Thank you.

Hi SD
I would just say that Shimla is a very nice place. Actually Heritage Walk is a type of Package arranged by tour organizer but what we did is we read the detail for Heritage Walk on net and did some research which included gathering information about places like its Speciality, Distance, Working Hours(timings), things to see, Food to eat etc.
My Personal Experience is also been planned according to the link I am pasting here: awawawahapatadac.naiac.in/sploffer48.htma
We started in morning from our Hotel and walked towards the Scandal Point which is famous for scenary view. then we moved towards the Lower Bazaar following Lakkar Bazaar and then walked the distance of about 3 to 4 km since the weather was bit cloudy so we didnt find any problem in walking that distance.
Had visited Viceregal Lodge and had seen it. Then on return we went to see bird Park just opposite to the entry Mail Gate of Viceregal Lodge and enjoyed viewing some birds of different species.
On Coming back we took Auto and got dropped at Lower Bazaar climbed the path since the Autowala dropped us on the road which is below this road as its hilly area u can understand. Had Some Panipuri then walk through Lakkar bazaar bought some wooden items for Gifting peoples and then we reached the Ridge.(I would say Ridge, Scandal Point, Christ Church all are located nearby only). We then walked towards Kali Mandir whcih is at a distance of about 15 mins and had Darshan of Maa Kali. By this time it was evening and Sun had set so the view of mountains was Blue quite similar to what we can see in the Wall Paper of Windows.
Came back and Sat in front of Christ Church had Ice cream did chat photography and finally came back to hotel.
Regarding weather I would say since its November I assure that you cannot see snowfall but the weather would be quite chilly during early morning and at Night too. Dont forget to take winter cloths with you. If you are newly married couple then you will enjoy a blast but if you have baby then do make preparation well in fact very well just to avoid inconvenience during your Happy leisure time.
Thanks
Srimanth
