About
Pidurangala is a massive rock formation located a few kilometers north of Sigiriya in Sri Lanka. It has an interesting history closely related to that of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Climbing to the top of Pidurangala Rock is more strenuous than climbing Sigiriya. If you are fit and adventurous it is a climb worth making. It will take you about two hours. There is far less to see on this site than Sigiriya

Our driver encouraged us to do Pidurangula Rock for sunset instead of Sigirya and in my opinion it's the one bad recommendation he gave us. Yes it's 1/10th the price, but it's about 10 times more difficult. It was so hard that I actually gave up halfway!! For context I am not super fit, but I am in my early 30s and have never abandoned a climb up to any landmark before.
In 30+ degree temperatures and 95% humidity, it was punishing. I saw people struggling and actually crying! The steps are uneven, crumbling and frankly dangerous. The only picture my fiance wanted from the whole trip was from the top of this rock so he soldiered on, but at 6'3 even he really struggled getting up the rocks near the end. Tourists have to help push and pull each other up. The pictures he showed me from the top didn't even look that good anyway!

This hike is not for the faint hearted. The path from the temple at ground level up to the cave temple is rough with huge steps, crumbling step and a degraded path. Beyond the upper temple, you need to scale rocks following painted arrows. But the view is rewarding.

This is a must visit place if you are traveling to Sigiriya rock fortress. The entrance is through the temple. be mindful to remove your shoes and walk until you start hike. not a difficult hike. There is an ancient Buddha statue top of the hill. the view from top of the rock is stunning. you can also see the Sigiriya Rock from their. Best place to see sunset or sunrise.

Very early start but worth it for the views!
You need to have a certain level of fitness to get to the top, but we made it in time and day there watching the sun rise.
Still smiling and can't believe we did it.
Wonderful memories

We nearly didn’t come to Pidurangala, and were so pleased we did. You’ve absolutely got to go – the view is spectacular.

The scramble at the top is pretty tough, but I’ve seen a comment below from someone in their 70s who said they managed it without any problems. At the very top there’s a bit of a climb on some rocks; the left hand route, facing Sigiriya, is much easier than the right hand.

Make sure you explore the whole top – there are spectacular views all around.

Climbed Pidurangala to see the sun rise - energetic climb but well worth it for the stunning views of the surrounding area and of Lions Rock. Don’t miss it.

Pidurangala was more impressive then Sigiriya, but Sigiriya has more history. Entrance fee is only 500 LKR.

It takes around 20 minutes to reach the top. The climb was easier then we expected, but still needs to cramble between some rocks near the top.

We went around 10 am, it was nice as majority of the hike is through some trees that protects against the sun.

At 500 rupees it’s good value for money. Plenty of relatively easy rock steps, followed by a scramble over large rocks at the very end of the climb. If you aren’t prepared for that don’t do the climb. I’m 70 and managed it OK. In the morning you get to climb in cooler conditions and most of the way you are in the shade. It was a little hazy when we got to the top, but we still had an impressive view of the Lion Rock and the surrounding countryside.
