Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Variety - that's what you feel as you move around Polonnaruwa. Hetadage is a good example of the cultural, religious and architectural beauty of the place.

There is not a lot left of this one however, still worth a look, as the pillars, (there a many) have intricate designs on them. During our visit it was a blazing day, cover up, in this case we had socks to wear as the ground was to hot to go bare foot, (as footwear is not allowed within the sacred sites).

The best part about this particular attraction is that there are at least 5 sites to see within close proximity to each other. The difference between this and the other set of pillared ruins in this area is that the carvings on the pillars are elaborate and distinctive.

Built in the late 12th century, Atadage was a shrine to hold the Relic of the tooth of the Buddha. Regretfully, not much is left nowadays: the stone base, the stairway, some pillars, some of the surrounding stone walls and three statues of Buddha, one of which is headless. Worth a quick stop, but there are much better preserved ruins in Plonnaruwa..

It is a ruined Buddhist Religious structure located among the Polonnaruwa ruins. The structure does not have a roof, while only the base and pillars exists. The base is made of bricks and the pillars are made of stone.
There are few Buddhist statues in the structure, which are in various state of ruins.

A historical ruin in Polonnaruwa built to keep Tooth Relic along with other relics. Only surviving structure built by King Vijayabahu 1 ( 1070-1110). Only remains are its foundations, stone pillars, a Buddha statue, granite stairs to go to upper floor. 'ATA" means eight ,so either 8 relics were kept here or built in 8 days. Here moonstone is of Anuradhapura variety which differs from Polonnaruwa type. Another great ruin to visit.
