Interesting and informative tour by friendly, well spoken lady. Fantastic batik creations of all sizes and prices. No forced sale or pressure to buy but you won’t be able to resist as it’s all so lovely!

Definitely a place that would visit again; extremely friendly, patient staff who accommodated to my needs .. I was able to see how the Sri Lankan culture reflected in the rich, detailed, handmade Batik work, whilst learning the entire procedure of creating the colourful masterpieces.
The products ranged from gorgeous wall hangings to various summer clothes (which were altered if needed), making it hard to leave them behind. Fortunately, the prices were reasonable and the staff was nice enough to negotiate prices and discounts.
I felt like I connected with the people and the place, while gaining a positive and memorable experience whilst collecting beautiful souvenirs from my visit to Kandy!

I and my wife were on a 13 days vacation in Sri Lanka.
Our visit to this shop was very good.We found the staff very courteous and patient. My wife takes a lot of time while shopping and it is embarrassing to be with her while she is bargaining. At the end of the day she ended up spending a fortune on shopping - gifts for family and friends. Hats off to the patience of the staff and the prices she finally managed to get.At the hotel I saw the purchases and liked them. After our Kandy sojourn we started off for Colombo the next day.
We reached Mount Lavinia Hotel, Colombo late in the evening. At the hotel she discovered that she had lost one of her rings. She searched her handbag and everything that was with us. We turned the car inside out but could not find the ring. She remembered that she had the ring till our visit to Gunatilake. I had cards of the places we had been to so I rang up all the places in Kandy and en-route. Someone picked up the phone at G Batiks and told me that the place was closed but he shall inform the owner and get back to me after the New Year Holidays (13 & 14 April). I gave him my contact details and of Mr. Primal (Atmosphere Ceylon) from whom we had rented the car. I then informed Primal of the incident.
On morning of 15 April I got a call from Gunitilake Batiks that they had found the ring. I told them that I was leaving for the airport and would request Primal to collect the ring and send it to me.
I had found the people of Sri Lanka to be good and friendly; however this act of Gunitilake staff speaks volumes of their sincerity and honesty. Apart from being good salesmen of Batiks they have proved to be good Human Beings and Ambassadors of their country.
Today I got an email from Rukshan (owner Gunitilake Batiks) that Primal collected the ring today. I wish the very best to all.

Truly a nice experience for anyone that visits Sri Lanka. Bit of cultural memorabilia can be taken back home and it won't break the bank.

There is no secret that drivers have an incentive to take tourists to this shop. But my family takes an interest in this technique, and we were given a tour of the manufacturing steps by an unhurried and knowledgeable guide.
It is an expensive shop, but it also contains many impressive pieces of work. The realization of the intricate steps and the demanding precision involved does give you a greater acceptance of the high prices. Sales pressure was moderate, and if you are not interested you can just walk out with a gracious "thank you for the tour."

I was taken to this Batiks factory/shop by my driver, Saman, as part of the shopping portion of the trip. I was very interested to learn the process by which they make Batiks, but the shop itself is WAY overpriced. I did by a few small things, but the items I really liked were not worth what they were marked as.

Seeing the different stages in producing batik was really interesting. There were many different styles of clothes to choose from for all ages so difficult to make a final choice! We were buying sarongs for teenage granddaughters and were given sheets with a QR code to show them the 6 different ways to wear a sarong - a thoughtful idea.

Been here during my stay in Kandy.
Batik museum/ Batik factory will be in every traveler's list or tourist agency's proposed schedule. In realty, it is a small workshop located in every part of Kandy, where they use wax and color (and some chemicals, of course) to give a different perspective to cloth making.
We spent an hour here to understand the procedures which was shown around to us very patiently, by the lady manager. It was definitely informative on our part. Liked it.
The variety of products kept here and pricing is not what I would suggest anyone to go for, without a tough bargain. I personally, didn't pick up anything, but, I am sure the prices are quite steep.
Good luck and enjoy.

The shop is nice, and you get a good introduction to the process of making the color print. The dresses and print painting are all handmade.
Be aware of the prices. They are not cheap so make sure you bargain for a good price before they start finalizing the dress or image for you. are all handmade.
