Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Bogambara Prison in Kandy was the second largest prison in the country. After operating for 138 years, the prison was closed in 2014. In 2019, the government declared the prison site a cultural tourism centre, the Bogambara Cultural Park.

This gaol is virtually in the centre of town & serves as a good reminder against drugs etc.
I'm not planning a visit inside.
It seems an outdated place for a gaol these days & should probBly be relocated & the gaol land used for a comminty purpose

The prison looks like an old English fortification and is situated smack in the middle of Kandy. There is not much more to do then walk around the outside perimeter unless you are escorted in by the local police. (wich I hope you can avoid). The walk is longer then the walk around Kandy lake and there is not much to see expet the wall.

Following the comments on TA, we went to the prison in order to visit it. In front of the prison 2 guards/policemen, guarding the premissess. When I ask if we can visit, the answer is NO. They confirm that the prison is empty and that the inmates were transfered to another jail, but no visit. We walked around the prisons wall, but thats it. So, if you have better things to do, dont visit this prison, because nothing to visit.

Old prison. We only saw this place from the outside above the hill. That is all. It is just a place on the way.

The now abandoned prison is quite a spectacle within Kandy. You can see it from a lot of places and the history surrounding it is rather interesting. Our tuk-tuk driver told us some great stories, to be taken with a pinch of salt, but nonetheless were intriguing.

Bogambara Prison used to be the second largest in the country until it closed its doors in 2014. Nowadays it is not used but you can walk round the outside and see the old walls, and even see inside from the road on the hill on the south side. It was constructed in 1876 and one of the oldest buildings in Kandy. There are plans to make this a historical site with tourists allowed to enter.

I must admit every time was passed by the prison it fascinated me and I wanted to have a look inside. We were told by our driver that it was going to be opening as A tourist attraction in the future.I would have visited it had it been open.Got some great photos from the big Buddha into the grounds.Looks like a beautiful historical building.
