After visiting the Bahiravakanda Vihara Buddha Statue (big white Seated Buddha up in the mountain), we proceeded to this attraction. Emgrance fee is 500 LHR per person.
Unlike the White Buddha where the steps are wide and long, this attraction has long, uphill way to reach the standing Buddha. Along the way are some exhibits depicting the life of Buddha. The conditions of the paths, hot weather and ground, bare feet made the visit here a struggle for me.
Took some pictures and slowly walked down to the parking lot.

Ranawana Rajamaha viharaya is located about 900 meters away from Colombo - Kandy highway between Peradeniya and Pilimathalawa...
The ancient temple belong to the reign of king Buwanekabahu the 4th in Gampola era, which consist with two ancient cave temples. The walls of the cave temples are decorated with frescos. One cave contains a shirine and the other and ancient stupa(pagoda). It is believed that the relics of Buddha are enshrines in this sthpa. This was built by an Indian Brahmon named "Sri Rama"....Ranawana purana rajamaha viharaya is most probably one of the most beautiful temples in Sri Lanka. Except ordinary characteristics of a temple, Ranawana Viharaya has a amazing trail in to the forest through rocks and trees. Many of important incidents Lord Buddha's life has made in forest attractively..

This Buddhist temple has a huge statue of standing Buddha along with many sculptures however explanation was missing. Tuk Tuk driver befooled us and took us to many places which were not in our itinerary including this one. However this place wasn’t disappointing, provided you are in Kandy. Rest of the Kandy city looked overhyped, continuous rain and tuk tuk driver spoiled our day. The tourist must hire the tuk tuk according to their itinerary, not that of the driver. They tend to take you to the places of commercial interests- gems/ jewellery/ spices/ tea etc

Ranawana Rajamaha viharaya is a recently renovated modern buddhist temple located at pilimathalawa off the main kandy-colombo highway and close to the Gadaladeniya Temple.
Located on a small hillock, there are many sculptures of stories depicting scenes from buddha's lifetime. The temple also hosts a huge standing buddha(which is currently under construction) on top of the hillock.

Not happy. We have just arrived at this temple to see an elephant chained up on its own near to the entrance. If you have any care for animals please do not support this tourist attraction.

This is a ancient Temple which has a Great Historical value. It is a beautiful temple bound with the nature. If you are coming from Kandy, after "kiribathkumbura" you will find "nanu-oya railway gate" (you can easily find is because Highway museum is also near it and you can see old road equipments there ). Just near to the Gate you can see the sign board of Ranawana Viharaya with the directions. The place is 1km away from the main road. You have to go there with a Private vehicle or you have to go by a three wheel (is bit far for walk ;) ). You can see a model of north entrance of "Saanchi sthupa" (The Buddhist vihara at Sanchi, India) at the Entrance of the temple. After that the Trails go up through the forest and rocks surrounded by statues which show many of important incidents Lord Buddha's life. At the Top you can see a Large Walking Buddha Statue.

I went to this site around 09:00 am and I was the only one there. It was amazing and you feel that the Buddha is with you and you are climbing to meet him. I am very familiar with the story of Buddha but unfortunately there are no signs or story boards in English so if you are not familiar with the story it may be confusing (tourist board take not) also you have to climb the steps from the bottom in bare feet which for some may be a struggle. Once your at the top it is well worth the climb and you are joined by all the disciples in single file emerging from the forest. It is located in the forest and you just follow the trail so you can't wander off. In all a good hour plus depending on you and the cost was 300 rupee. At the bottom there is also a small cave which is supposed to be 500 years old with various wall paintings. In all a great half day out.

This is a great place to visit. Wander round all the different temples, check the art work and so many sculptures. Fantastic. Its a temple and art gallery at the same time. Most of the exterior is quite new but its all put together in a respectful creation that makes it seem like a traditional temple.well worth a visit.
