After visited over 80 countries and paid 200 rsd for taxi to get here and back to Novi Sad I can only say that I'm so disappointed. Nothing is worth seeing in Sremski Karlovci!? This is my worst detour I've done. Sure, a very few bulidings is looking pretty good. But I would rather go to Indjija. It would be more interesting.

One of the biggest advantage of Danube river cruise is that you get a chance to see beautiful small towns which otherwise you would never see. It was about 15 km from famous Novi Sad. It had many historical buildings like Grammar School, St. Nicholas Cathedral, Patriarchy Court and Four Lions. This beautiful small town was very quite and peaceful. There a lot of wineries nearby. Worth visiting for few hours.

Sremski Karlovci are an extremely interesting historical site. A city rich in winemaking, architecture, hearty residents and always attractive facilities for guests. The Renaissance and Baroque buildings make a lovely, romantic atmosphere. Rich history can be seen at every step. Since it is in a very favorable position, many conquerors have conquered this city in the past. From the Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Hungarian Empire, the Habsburgs.
A congress was held in Sremske Karlovci, marking the end of hostilities between the Ottoman Empire and the Holy League (the coalition of Austria, Poland, the Venetian Republic). February 26, 1699. At the place where peace was signed, in 1817 a chapel dedicated to the Holy Lady of Peace was erected.
During the Habsburg rule this city is progressing spiritually and culturally. The beautiful Baroque buildings are built, the most famous being the Karlovac High School ( Gymnasium ), whose current building was erected in 1891. Metropolitan Stevan Stratimirović was the main financier and conceptual builder of the gymnasium. The language of instruction was Latin. All professors were personally elected by Stevan Stratimirović. This is the city where the famous poet Branko Radicevic worked, wrote and taught. Also famous Serbian reformer Vuk Stefanović Karađžić. The building that left us the most impressive impression is the Patriarchal Palace. The castle building is one of the most beautiful buildings in Serbia. It was built in the 19. century, a combination of baroque and renaissance, and truly leaves it without words. In 1807 the first pharmacy was established, which still operates today. A large number of wineries are located in this town. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rizling, Chardonnay, and certainly the most famous Bermet you can taste all the wines in one of the wineries. Simply beautiful and enchanting. For more, visit this wonderful place, because it is worth a visit.

We stayed in Sremski Karlovci while in Vojvodina, skipping the large city of Novi Sad. Karlovci is a lovely little town with a picturesque center which includes many beautiful buildings of historical value. We hired a driver/guide for the following day and had a wonderful time doing things that would have been difficult on our own. He took us to the churches, helped us get a guided tour by one of the students at the gymnasium, was able to get someone to unlock the Chapel of Peace, and drove us to a hilltop cemetery and a great view. He also arranged for a tour of the Museum of Bee Keeoing and Wine Cellar of the Zivanovic family which was fascinating where the wine and honey tastings were superb. After that, we went to visit several of the monasteries of the nearby Fruska Gora and ended the day with a visit to a local farm where we talked with the farmer about his family's history and the current situation for farmers. All in all, visiting Sremski Karlovci was a great idea. If anyone would like the guide's contact information, just email us through TripAdvisor. (We were able to get his information from another Trip Advisor contributor ourselves.)

Our main aim was to visit one of the winery for wine tasting. However, it was a lovely town with many beautiful buildings. If there was more time, I'd love to stay on a bit for walking around the town.

This town looks like postcard Europe. In the summer as we visited, it was so beautiful. From the church and the fountains to the walkways and beer gardens it was beautiful. Like a postcard.

We loved our day trip to Sremski Karlovci from Novi Sad. The town is easily accessible by bus lines 61 or 62 at 1,350 RSD per person one way. Make your way through the town then follow the steps to the View Point. It is worth every step. Don't forget to try some wine at one of the shops. It makes a great day trip from Novi Sad or Belgrade.

Full disclosure--we didn't get to try the wine, so no comment on that. The town itself, though, is well-worth a visit during any trip to Novi Sad or the nearby area. There is so much history there, we highly recommend finding someone (or a book) to have as a guide. We got extremely lucky in that regard. Though we loved Novi Sad, during our next trip to Serbia, we fully expected to spend a couple nights in Sremski Karlovci to be able to see more of the town and its sights. Wikipedia and other websites have information about the attractions, so I won't go into those here, but I will recommend bringing several empty water bottles, and filling up on the fountain in the center of town. I'll let the locals tell you what will happen to you when you do.

You should absolutely visit the high school, which was established 1791. If you pay 50 DIN (0,5 e), you will get a student guide and you can visit the old library also. Very interesting and beautiful school.

Hello, is it possible to purchase a fishing permit somewhere in the town?
Written 3 July 2018
Yes, you can buy them at Association of sports fishermen "Dunav" (ask someone in Sremski Karlovci for the precise address when you get there). They work only on Wednesday and Saturday from 15-17h which is good to know. Daily price is 1000din~9EUR.

Hi ,
I am looking for a wine tasting event for a group of twelve persons. They will arrive by taxi from Novi Sad. Is it best to book an excursion, or is it wise to drive to city centre and walk to a Winery? And what is the best winery to visit?

You might want to contact the local tourist office +381(0)21882127. They may know which are open, but my experience was that they only knew which there are. Their tourist guide lists a number of them with addresses and phone numbers.
