ORADEA MEDIAEVAL FORTRESS HISTORY AND EVENTS WITNESSING THE PASSAGE OF TIME If nowadays we can hear about history in school and see it in museums, this is the best place to feel it. The fortress has witnessed the passage of time and continues to keep its old charm. It tells everlasting stories and passes on to its visitors some of the history it knows. The Fortress of Oradea is nowadays the living proof of those historical times and it continues to remind everyone of what it used to represent. Also, it is one of the symbols of the city along Crișul Repede river and the heart of its cultural events. LIVING HISTORY! The Mediaeval music concerts held here will take you back to an atmosphere of already forgotten times, while fighting demonstrations and guided tours accompanied by weapon and armour presentations will steal your attention. The Fortress is no longer literally under siege, but still there are many tourists and local people visiting it, our of a wish to live a bit of real history. Here are some of the new functions of the Fortress: - the City Museum - the Museum of Bread - the Bakery, dating more than 3 centuries back - cafés - traditional restaurants

There is nothing special to see at this fortress. It is still under restoration after all these years and in my opinion they didn't keep the original atmosphere. They have there a lot of cars parked inside, modern coffee places with loud electronic music. If you want to see a real fortress you will be disappointed here.

The Fortress hosts the Oradea Museum, which was very interesting even for me, although I'm not passionate about history. They had many realistic dioramas and it was obvious they had put a lot of work into offering a valuable and memorable experience to visitors. You can find exhibitions regarding various periods, from the Middle Ages to World War I and even the 70s and 80s.
Outside the museum, through a separate entrance, you can also visit a small but nice museum of templar knights.

Oradea Fortress was built in place of the medieval castle that was erected there in the 12th c. Gothic cathedral once stood in the heart of the castle, but nearly all medieval and gothic buildings were demolished or rebuilt during extend, Renaissance rebuilding programme. However, the traces of old, Middle-Ages structure are still visible. Renaissance palace that lays in the centre of the fortress was built in two stages between 1620 and 1648. Constructions of five bastions that started already in 16th c. lasted till 18th c. All of them has survived turbulent history of the fortress. Baroque church, being an extension of the north-east wing of the palace, creates, along with it figure of pentagon. Between the palace and the bastions there're a few old outbuildings. Today, Oradea Fortress is a home to museum and art galleries, when its dry moat was turned into a park. Also, within the fortress walls three restaurants can be found. Although, the bastions are pretty impressive the fortress as a whole is rather modest. Still, I had a nice stroll around its bastions. And how to get there? In Oradea there's international airport located around 5 miles from the city centre. Those who have more spare time at hands can try to get there by train, by coach or by car.

As a senior member of The Imperial Historical Order of The Teutonic Knights, I have to visit Oradea often. While there I often visit this fortress as it's part of our history.
It is a very interesting and lovely building, full of momentos of Romanian and Oradea's history. There are many levels to climb, and many rooms with memories of the Fortress's past and memories of Romania's terrible time when it was a Russian State.
Romania, thankfully is now an independent state, hopefully it's Monarchy will be reinstated very soon.
I love this Fortress, and will always visit here when I'm in Romania.

In recent years, investments have been made in the rehabilitation of the Citadel, so that it is now a tourist spot worth visiting. The fortress has a pentagonal shape, with the Princely Palace forming one of the sides. Interesting are the stories about the 5 towers of the Citadel - Golden Tower, Bethlen, Broken, Little King and Red. Perhaps the most unusual thing I found here is that the Old Astronomical Observatory set the prime meridian between 1445 and 1465. Interesting!

If you are looking for a chill way to spend a sunny afternoon, Oradea Fortress is the place to go.
Plus, you’ll be able to find two great restaurants inside. Corsarul is in my top 3 favorite restaurants in the city and it’s located inside the Fortress.

You can get some info about the old fortress and see some of the buildings, but not to much to do. There are some temporary exhibitions in one of the buildings. Hopefully things will improve in the future.

At a glance it seems there's not much to see here except for some old walls and the ruins of a star shaped fortress.
There are actually so many things to be explored behind those walls. The museum is modern and very well maintained. There were three exhibitions hosted by this museum in July 2019, when we have visited Oradea Fortress . The ceramic exhibition was really interesting, displaying Transylvanian clay pottery since XVIII and XIX century, from private collections. The contemporary art gallery, as well as the photo exhibition was also interesting.
We didn't end up exploring everything, as we decided to visit this place in the last day of our stay in Oradea and we run out of time. Now we're quite sorry about this poor plan and are going to pay more attention to the fortress if we'll ever visit Oradea again.

I see this days the city of Oradea a verry beautiful city verry close to hungarian border, with a nice fortress verry old since 1100 rebuilt in the 16 century is going a large process of restoration, is surended by a verry nice park with alee small lakes, in few year problably you can see a verry nice fortress. The old city center of ORADEA is fully with beautiful barroc and art-nouveau palace and many beautiful church. The river Crisul Repede is very beautiful and atractive , you can see manny fishermans along the river.

I liked the exhibitions from inside the Fortress but especially the “ scene from First war”. Very good made, with a lot of authenticity.

c'è un sacco di materiale in italiano sui siti ufficiali, ho visto guide in altre lingue, la soluzione migliore credo sia scrivere alla fortezza. Con me son stati gentili e disponibili. In ogni caso ne vale la pena
