Closed due to pandemic. Internet said it was open. Our hotel said it was open. We walked a mile to find it closed. The butterfly place was open. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

A great place to find answers to various questions about Inca culture religion and social life. Its a little bit to walk from Aquas Calientes.

Came here as I had an entire day to spend in Agua Calientes and not much else to do. It’s a 20-30 minute walk to get here through a forest. Entrance is free if you have a ticket for Machu Picchu otherwise it’s 22 soles.
It takes 30 minutes to go around if you take it slowly and there isn’t too much to see but it is interesting, with lots of pictures.

Although somewhat small, this is a great museum with lots of objects, information, and photos.
Yes, if possible, come here first for a bit of a foundation on the history of the area.
We didn't have our tickets from the day before but showed our pictures with date stamp and we got free entry.
From our hotel at West end of town it took 40 minutes to walk there and 30 for return. A very nice walk with lots to see and you'll walk over a hanging bridge.
You will pass a butterfly garden (Miraposas), then El Jardin and the museum is just a few yards past El Jardin to the left.

You will enjoy Machupicchu more and better understand the history of the Inka people if you have time to visit museum first. We walked from Aquas Calientes in the afternoon, the day before visiting Machupicchu. Since we brought our entrance tickets to Machupicchu the caretaker just stamped it and let us in. Be aware of opening/ closing times.

This museum is a little out of the way, but worth going to if you have the time. It is about a 20 minute walk from Aguas Calientes or you can have the Machu Picchu bus drop you off on your way back from MP, which is what we did. Small museum with some interesting artifacts. We had a guide at MP, but the museum added to our knowledge. We spent about 30 minutes here. Scenic walk back to Aguas Calientes.

Horrible man at reception! Screaming at visitors! (I was sad to learn that not all Peruvian people are so sweet and nice). This man is just horrible!
AND, it's not worth the wait. It opens only at 12.00 and we waited 3 hours to enter and see an empty museum. A few artifacts and some photos. And rhe video was off.
He was also shouting and throw out a girl!!!! because she took a photo, but there were no visible signs that photo-taking is prohibited.
Just horrible!
Don't go!

We visited on our way back from MP, and it was absolutely worth it. It only takes about 45 minutes to go through the museum, but it provides a lot of great context and history about the Incans' lifestyle, values, death rites, culture, religion, technology and scientific knowledge. If you're going to go to MP, make a point to learn as much as you can about this fascinating and important society.

Hola !

You can buy your ticket for the museum in advance online on the same site as you buy your ticket for Machu Picchu. I don’t think you can buy it when you get to the museum.
Aguas Calientes doesn’t have much to see or do. I would suggest going the night before Machu Picchu so you can get there early in the morning, then stay one more night because you’re going to be tired after Machu Picchu.

How do I get there from the MP train station? What is the fee and what are the hours of operation?

You can walk but it will take about 45 mins. The buses to MP go past it but will not drop you off!
The only other way would be a taxi.
I don't know the opening hours but you can check that on their website.
