This was my favorite activity on the island. We launched from Merida which is one of the closest options to get to the mouth of the river. Some companies have tows to the mouth of the actual estuary, but we did the 45 minute-ish row to the opening. It allows us time to take in views of the volcano. Along... More

We started a little south of the creek and our cayaks were pulled over the lake. Even if we were not very lucky with the wildlife (no turtles, caymans or monkeys - we were there in the early morning), we can totally recommend this trip. You will experience nature at its best - very quiet and untouched.

If you're planning to do the trip, definitely get some arm workout in ahead of time, it can be tough! We started about 50 minutes from the entrance to the river, and when we arrived it was quite shallow. Our guide was great and on the way in actually just pulled us along in our kayaks while he walked. There... More

The multiyear drought in Nicaragua /Central America has created many issues including the disappearance of over 100 rivers including this lush river eco-system. Locals told me that as soon as it rains the lake and river fills up and farmers will be happily planting their subsistence crops of rice. We took a horseback ride since we couldn't kayak. Our host... They told us the water level was low at hotel paraisio but when we went, the owner said we will have to walk a bit. We ended up kayaking the lake and walking the river part. So be careful when booking. If it hasn't rained in a while, don't bother.

It's only a 5 minute drive from La Omaja to the huts on the beach where (for an extra $20 - totally worth it) a motor boat will shuttle you & tow the kayaks to the entrance of the Rio Istian estuary. This was our favorite excursion while on Ometepe! Since it was dry season, the river is a bit... More

I did a kayak trip on Rio Isian in late January 2016. Water level was very low so I couldn't get very far up the wetland river area. It didn't matter too much to me as I just enjoyed being on Lake Nicaragua & between the 2 volcanoes. I know that some reviewers were disappointed when the water level was... More

I loved my solo trip up the Rio Istian in the kayak I rented for the day. I saw caimans, turtles and lots and lots of birds (herons, egrets, stilts, ducks, osprey, etc.). My recommendation is to GO SOLO, as it means you can move silently which is the only way to see much wildlife. I was the only person... More

Kayaking through the swamp of the Rio Istian was a great afternoon activity and an opportunity to see many species of birds I have never seen before along with several I have. There were also turtles in the swamp and a possibility to see caimans (a type of crocodilian). I highly recommend this.

Lovely morning kaying, starting out by motor boat from Merida and then kayaks starting at river. Didn't see as many birds as hoped but still enjoyed the outing quite a lot. Beautiful views of both volcanos.
