This beige and ochre structure was built by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami, who was the founder of Chefchaouen. It was a fortification built to defend against the offences of the Portuguese and Spanish armies. Chefchaouen’s small but charming kasbah dates back to between the 15th and 16th centuries AD. It was built under the command of the city’s founder, Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami. The purpose was to defend the new settlement from attacks by the Portuguese and Spanish. Chefchaouen or blue city is more authentic by its color and the city is not big. The most visited places are Place Outa el Hammam, Kasbah and alleys. Outa el Hammam is loacted inside old part of city, we enjoyed a drink. Highly recommended city.

Tiny but oh so photogenic square in the old city. There is a smattering of restaurants but really most are here to take a photo and take it in.

Place Outa el Hammam is the main square of the Medina of the fantastic town of Chefchaouen, in the North of Morocco. This is a place, where you can see the main Kasbah (the most important and historical building in the town, now a museum), the Big Mosque (the most important religious building in the town) and some souvenir shops and restaurants. Also it is close the Medina, so it is a very good place to begin or finish the walk around the old town. Here is where people meet and always there are music and shows. Lunch or dinner herr, while you see people is fantastic. (see also Chefchaouen Medina, Kasbah Museum, Grand Mosque, Spanish Mosque, Ras el Maa Waterfall, Chefchaouen Cemetery and Bab Kasaba Restaurant)…

We had no idea if that side of the history. Saw inside the goal, still with chains for feet and wrists. Climbed the Portuguese tower for a fantastic view of the whole area. We enjoyed it and the explainations as provided by our guide as like most of Morocco most museum information is only in French and Arabic …
