One of the most visit place in indonesia..feel the mystical ambience, nice view. See the sun rises, enjoy the cold weather...dont forget to visit teletubies hill, pasir berbisik. Have a jeep ride, horse ride...and go to the crater of volcanoe.

OVERALL
Mt Penanjakan is a major viewing point for all tourists, in fact, all the tourists arriving in hotels in Probolinggo will end up taking the jeep tour to this place.

Most of which will depart from their hotel (depending on their hotel location), either at 3am or 4am and will reach the summit of Mt.Penanjakan at about 5am.

The long wait for the sunrise is quite a painful experience bcos the weather was very cold, easily can drop to 7'C to 11'C.

JEEP TOUR
The jeep itself is a a 6 seater vehicle, comfortable for 4 adults to be seated minus the front 2 seats. It takes about 40 mins to reach the parking lot at Mt. Penanjakan and it's quite chaotic but often well managed by the locals. Visitors are expected to walk the slope hill for about 30-50m in order to get to the summit, the open-air observation area.

DRINK STALLS AND LOCAL HAWKERS
Along the slopehill, there are up to 6 drink stalls on the narrow road close to the summit and as many local hawkers selling corns for 15,000rp. It adds to the bustling part of Mt Penanjakan.

WHAT TO EXPECT
At the observation area, there are actually 2 areas of viewing. The left is towards the sunrise and the right is towards Mt Bromo. In my opinion, it is worth to see the sunrise first (5.50am) and then move towards to the right viewing area after 7am. By 5am, the crowd is about 300-500 over people at the observation area. It was that crowded and it was like shoulder to shoulder very packed.

Most of the tourists don't get to see a good sunrise. The sun rays will disperse which is why you wont see an eggyolk sunrise. But it is still worth to witness the sunrise.

Naturally, when sunrise brightens up the sky, most of the crowds will leave and this is the time (7am) where you can roam freely at the observation area to go towards the right side to see Mt Bromo views.

There's no need to rush, plenty of time to take photos when crowds leave.

LEAVING THE OBSERVATION AREA
Many tourists did not realize, how beautiful the views from Mt Penanjakan, not only to Bromo area but the views towards the distant volcano. In my opinion, a visitor should take their time to spend a great time at Mt Penanjakan when the crowds have left. This is the time to have a good look over Malang, volcano, sand of sea, Bromo, Cemoro Lawang and the east-side view. See photos.

It will take about 30mins for the jeep to run down the slope towards the sea of sand. That's basically the end of the visit to Mt Penanjakan. Enjoy.

i went to pananjakan view point to see bromo sunrise. i watched from lower pananjakan hill, because my jeep driver stopped there. i don't know if there is another one higher pananjakan view point. afer i climb the lower pananjakan view point i saw blitz and flash light from another hill higher. i was upset, because the view from lower pananjakan is not like i've seen from tv. i think the higher pananjakan view point is much better. tell your jeep driver to take you to highest pananjakan view point. the bromo view from lower pananjakan is from the side , but bromo view from higher pananjakan is front view bromo

It was my 2nd visit. However, it was foggy all over we couldn`t see the sunrise.
Other than the sunrise, go around to the crater, the savannah, the scenery is breathtaking. But this is really depand on the weather so really need to plan carefully and learn the prices, as most of them (horse-rent, ojek, etc) are bargain price except the food stahls.
Also, our guide said that if we want less crowd we should go on wees. On weekends, people at the observation area in Penanjakan is very very crowded.

I went here on the middle of July. It was very great trip for me. If you want to catch the sunrise you must to go to Penanjakan view point before 05.00am but here is a lot of people. Another choice if you don't want to catch the sunrise. Maybe you will go here around 06.00-06.30am. This place is very nice and nothing people because there crowd going to the crater of Mt.Bromo.

Like most other travellers, we came to see the sunrise view via jeep, and were at the platform at 4 am. It was already crowded, but we decided to move forward to explore. Our reward was an unoccupied stretch of railing which had an unblocked (by bushes) view of Mt Bromo, Batok and Semeru. So, I would say the 3 main things are 1) to set off early so that there are more spots available to choose from to wait for the sunrise, 2) absolutely DO NOT wait at the benches as your view will certainly be blocked later on, 3) choose a railing near to a pillar as the pillar can be used as support/stand for your camera to shoot in the low light and also star trails ... (see my photos to get an idea of the platform) Good luck!!

A unique trip to reach the place has to accomplish. By a four-wheel drive car that joins a convoy, we have to start from Malang at midnight passing the city, kampongs/rural area, hills, farming, and forest before reaching the highest parking area. Waiting the the sunrise time, we can spend the cool temperature with a cuppa tea or coffee and grilled sweet corn, if you like. The pain is certainly paid when the sun rises just under the horizonta level of our sight.

Watching the sunrise is a common tradition all of humanity share from every corner of the Earth. Unfortunately being the best place around to watch it attracts just about everybody else in town & every other town nearby. Basically at 4am every foreigner from under every rock can be found here at Gunung Penanjakan like lemmings on a cliff standing around in Gore-Tex wind breakers, LED headlamps & quick-dry pants. Everyone will also be carrying some sort of photo camera, iPhone or Samsung camera phone.

The climax is the Sun rising, that first sunray breaking over the horizon, as if on queue, the freak show of people stand up with arms outstretched like zombies holding cameras amidst oohhhhh’s & aahhhhhhs. Most annoying however is all the chatter & squealing from people, both local & foreign, who just can’t seem to enjoy the sunrise in quiet peace. Sunrise, with the backdrop of the smoking volcano cloudy mist at its feet seen from 2,770 metres high, is a breathtaking sight, sometimes I wish it were appropriate to use my backhand for things other than tennis.

The viewing position at Gunung Penanjakan is definitely spectacular, you are basically looking down from the edge of a cliff. Mt Bromo is the star with its famous volcanic smoke. The viewing position is reached by a 15-20 min uphill hike from where the jeeps are parked. The pathway up is a dirt track without any lights. There are heaps of guys with horses if morning hikes in the dark are not your cup of tea, understandably the prices aren’t cheap but there are always plenty of takers. Around the top there is a makeshift shack which sells hot drinks, a luxury when sitting in the cold dark morning waiting for the light of the sun to warm your bones.

Warning: This place is packed like a human sardine can, if it’s raining, don’t even bother.
