I found this place very wondrous and better than Sukhothai. It is much more remote than Sukhothai and super green and rural. The remoteness and rural-ness I think is what makes this place such a gem. There were very few people here when we visited, and I only saw two other foreigners.
Speaking of which, this place unfortunately charges based on skin color. If you are white, black or any race non-Asian, you will be charged a price 5x higher. So I'm sad to say, I give this place 2 stars off because of that.
While this place is spectacular and easily in my top 10 places I've visited in Thailand (I've traveled all over and been here for 7 years), I'm not sure if I'd say it is worth a visit alone. However, if you do make it to Sukhothai, definitely make the extra trip to come out here.

We went to Sukhothai Historical Park the day before and both were just stunning. So fortunate to be able to ride bicycles around these beautiful ruins with hardly any other tourists. Our photos are postcard perfect. Terrible for the Thai economy but wonderful for us. People were lovely to us too. Do note that the ruins that are outside of the main square way off to the side are a distance away. Recommend doing those by car unless you plan to spend the day there in which case enjoy the bike ride.

A trip back centuries. That was what the visit was about. My husband and I spent the long weekend in Sukhothai and drove down for an hour and fifteen minutes to this historical park. The road from Sukhothai is very picturesque. The park has a guided tour in a quaint tram. Tickets were for 60 baht. And we also paid the entry tickets. The team driver was a very gentle Thai and clearly spoke very well about the various sites and places of interest. However it was in Thai and we couldn't follow what was said. What we did was refer to the tour pamplet and also the descriptions mounted outside the sites.
We marvelled at how well maintained the park was. The river Yom flows gently by. The ruins have been protected well.
Once the rise was over, we used the facilities for a snack and drink. Again, well maintained and organised. Loved the trip.

After the main Sukhothai Historical Park, this is another great place. Again, this is big or bigger in size than thr Sukhothai park, awesome forest cover with extremely well organised every point. even cycles are available for a small charge.
one has to spend few hours to enjoy this amazing history brought on a beautiful platter of maintenance for all

We took the 06:40 Wintour bus 622 which came in from Phitsanulok heading towards Chiang Rai - Mae Sai for 45 Baht each. Tickets are only available at Sukhothai in the morning, as priority is given to passengers leaving from Phitsanulok or Sukhothai who are buying longer journey tickets. There was plenty of space on the bus for us to find a seat together. The bus traveled for an hour and twenty minutes to the drop off point for Si Satchanalai Historical Park. This is at 17.432508 N, 99.811989 E (17°25'57.0"N 99°48'43.2"E). Highway 101, Kilometer 135 + 550.
We rented bicycles for 50 Baht each from the gentleman who is at the store by the covered bus stop. He showed us a improvised sign with the scheduled bus times for return trips to Sukothai. Fortunately, we elected to return a little earlier than 15:30 to catch the last bus. It actually arrived at 14:55. The store owner had put out a large purple banner to let the bus know we were waiting. As it was raining, this was most helpful.
As you roll across the end of the cable and plank Yom River Bridge 17.430535 N, 99.811859 E (17°25'49.9"N 99°48'42.7"E), the nice lady at the ticket office for Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat วัดพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุ will flag you down to pay 20 Baht. If for some rrason you do not want to see this temple, you would have to go up Highway 101 to Highway 1201 and take the concrete bridge across the Yom River.
Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat 17.429720 N, 99.811918 E (17°25'47.0"N 99°48'42.9"E) is technically not a part of the Si Satchanalai Historical Park, but is well worth seeing.

There has a museum at 17.428401 N, 99.806374 E (17°25'42.2"N 99°48'23.0"E) with skeletal remains that have been left in place at the depths they were discovered at. This can be a separate ticket, or combined with the main park. It is cheaper not to if you will not venture an additional six kilometers by bicycle in each direction to visit.
Wat Jan Jao Archaeological Site วัดจันทร์เจ่าโบราณสถาน, 17.428471 N, 99.805108 E (17°25'42.5"N 99°48'18.4"E) is free to visit.

There was not enough time to see everything. There are a limited number of guesthouses in the area, and it would be best to have more time than we did.

We would beg to differ with the enthusiastic reviews of others. The hour bus ride is fine. Luckily our tuk tuk driver caught up with the early bus which left the station before the estimated time of 6:40 AM. We arrived at the park about an hour later, rented horrible bikes, drove across the swinging bridge to reach both historic parks. We love visiting archeological sites but if you're going to visit Si Satchanalai, visit it before Sukhothai and Ayuthaya or you may be disappointed. I would rather have spent an extra day in Sukhothai or Ayuthaya. We only stayed over night in Ayuthaya and we could have spent 2 nights to avoid being in the park in the heat of the day. Ayuthaya is huge. Si Satchanalai didn't have many visitors, we were the only foreigners on our bus but a large busload arrived at the park around 9:30. By 10, it was very hot (January is winter in Thailand) and by 11 the heat was getting to be too much. Sukhothai and Ayuthaya are amazing (even if you've been to Angkor, which we have) and definitely worth visiting. Go to the ruins early to avoid crowds, Buddhas face East generally so the light is also better. Busloads of people do move on so you can often out wait them. The last local "bus" from Old Sukhothai to New Sukhothai leaves before sunset so if you stay for sunset, you'll have to take a tuk tuk back around 150. Also the first bus to Old Sukhothai in the morning gets you to the park after sunrise but still very early with the sun still low in the sky or you can take a tuk tuk there. pricing for the all the parks has changed so expect to pay more than you read. As for Si Satchanalai look at the photos people have taken and the amount and compare them with Sukhothia and Ayuthaya - you'll notice there aren't a great deal. However there is a lovely natural park with waterfalls nearby so hiking could make it fun for nature lovers but then a day would be too short. There are only a few buses each day to and from Si Satchanalai and the time table is an estimate - as we found out. We just don't feel it's worth all the effort to visit unless you must visit everything. Hopefully if you do go, this review will lower your expectations and you won't be as disappointed.

Visited by taxi from Old Sukhothai on an all day trip(1300bahts for2 ) approx.
50 km.to Si-Satchanalai. First stop at the amazing Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat. You can climb up this. Close by is a rickety old wobbly wooden bridge over the Yom river.Whilst half way across 2 motor bikes came past and made the bridge even more wobbly !!
Four other temples in this area ,then onto the main park where bikes can be hired to go round the Historical Park at your leisure. Hardly any tourists. Very well manicured park. There were 140 steps in one area to visit old ruins. At the top were 100' s of cranes nesting in the trees.
Definately worth a visit, back to Old Sukhothai after visiting very old kilns, pottery shops etc.

Visited this park on my own about 16 years ago and enjoyed it. This trip I had the pleasure of showing it to my wife and kids. We all enjoyed it.
We hired bikes – 50 baht each I think, something ridiculously low – and zipped along the park paths…kids loved it more than the ruins and kept doing laps. There was hardly anybody there.
I’ve been to a lot of the old ruin sites in Thailand and this is one of the best and hardly anyone seems to know it. DO NOT MISS IT.
Of the old ruins sites locally, I’d rate them in this order of worth visiting:
1. Si Satchanalai Historical Park
2. Kamphangphet Historical Park
3. Sukhothai Historical Park

This place is like 56 Kms from new sukhothai and you get the bus/minivan for this place from Bus station. Take the truck which goes to old sukhothai via bus station - 20 THB and then bus/minivan to Sri Satchanalai - 40 mins (50 THB) by minivan. It will stop near the entrance of a temple from where you can rent a bicycle (not many though). From here you have to drive like 2 kms inside going through beautiful temples and forest area on the way. Also, there is a hanging bridge over the river. Better to walk with bicycle if not confident of riding on it, as it keeps moving and a slip on rainy day can get you into water. The first temple you come across on this route is the most beautiful one - 20 THB entrance fee. Next you drive along small village and then forest, which was very calm and refreshing. I always loved cycling around villages. Next you reach the Sri Satchanalai park entrance - 100 THB for foreigners and 20 THB for locals and work permit holders. This total park is a forest and temples scattered here and there, can spot cranes flying around. This place was more beautiful to me than Sokhothai Historical Park. Last bus from here back to Sukhothai is at 03:00 PM, so better to rent a motorbike from Sukhothai (250 THB) and take your time to discover this place.

It's situated about 60 km north from New Sukhothai (75 km from Old Sukhothai Historical Park).
There is a direct bus connection from Sukhothai Bus Terminal, it takes about 1 hr 45 mins to get there and costs about 50 BTH return ticket. The bus stops directly opposite the entrance to Si Satchanalai Historical Park.
You can walk through the park or rent a bicycle (it's a large park). If I remember well I paid only 30 BTH for renting a bike (much cheaper than in Sukhothai Historical Park).
The monuments, bridges are not so well preserved as the ones in Sukhothai Historical Park. But there are no so many foreign visitors, so you meet mainly only Thai tourists.
Si Satchanalai Historical Park is located on the Yom River and bounded by forested hills in which are located 204 ancient monuments. The Sukhothai Historical Park has only 193 ancient monuments.
Recommend to see this ancient site.

Written 10 August 2018
hire a scooter, grab a map and ride there, it's only about 50 kms away,...or chat to a local thai at the old city and work out a deal.
The park is worth the visit

The Park is beautifully kept and there are good roads and pathways throughout. You can get close to the temples and ruins, and unless you want to get close enough to examine in detail, you can get superb views from close enough, with wonderful photo opportunities. Certainly worth the effort.
Written 10 August 2018
Can be added to the Sukhothai overall ticket if you wish, or obtained locally. Depends on your nationality.
Thai nationals gain admission for 1/6th the price for foreigners. About 150 baht.

Greetings: I am planning to fly from Bangkok to Sukhothai spending two or three nights, proceed to Si Satchanalai, proceed to Lampang, and fly from Lampang back to Bangkok. My question concerns ground transport connecting Sukhothai, Si Satchanalai, and Lampang. Is there reliable bus service between these sites? Is it best to visit Si Satchanalai as a day trip (returning to Sukhothai for the night)? I prefer not to rent a car or motorcycle. Thanks for your help.
Written 3 August 2015
There are regular and inexpensive buses going to and from from and to Sukhothai. I do recommend staying in Sukhothai where you will have far more choice, but you do want to allow a day to get and explore si Satchanalai, as there is so much to see, once you go deeper into the site. Depending on the humidity when you go, you can either walk around the site, or better still, hire a bicycle.
Other transport between the two includes taxi or
tuk tuk!
