Wat Maheyong is located about 5 Km from Wat MahaThat. There is an entrance ticket here, but you can use your combi 220 Baht ticket, if you have bought it earlier. There are sign boards, illustrating on its history and significance.
The Wat was not crowded as it is off the main tourist circuit. There is a long walkway leading to the exhibits. The exhibits here are the Chedi, and the ordination hall. The Chedi's platform is supported by 80 sculpted elephants. There is ample greenery around.
There is a monastery and retreat centre here and discreet dressing is needed.
The place bounds to be hot, therefore carry a hat, sun lotion and water. We spend about 1 hour here. You will need, to have your own transport, otherwise you’ll be stranded here. For us, the trip was worth the effort

I rate this temple four stars because its impression largely depends on when you visit. Constructed in the reign of King Borommarachathirat II (1424-1448) who led Siamese forces to subjugate Cambodia, this peaceful monastery was among the grandest in Ayutthaya prior to its fall. Nowadays it's a functional temple with a popular meditation retreat held in a leafy courtyard beside the beautiful ruins reflecting Sinhalese monastic architecture. Impossible to miss are the ubosot and the chedi with 80 elephant statues at its base, the number denoting the age when the Enlightened One entered parinirvana.
While these structures aren't very impressive compared with major attractions such as Wat Chaiwatthanaram (วัดไชยวัฒนาราม), on the full moon night of religious holidays (i.e. Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha and Asalha Bucha) when thousands of Thais join the light waving rite (เวียนเทียน), here you can witness Thai tradition at its best, not unlike celebrating Loy Krathong (ลอยกระทง) in Sukhothai. With a lotus and a lighted candle in their hands, Buddhists (monks then followed by laypersons) circumambulate around the ubosot three times, once for each of the Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha. Many photographers drive all the way from Bangkok just to take pictures of the ceremony, which you can appreciate by googling "เวียนเทียน วัดมเหยงคณ์".
If this candlelit procession is your cup of tea, it's best to arrange transport in advance. However, those staying overnight in Ayutthaya should be able to find someone to bring you here though not all know its location. From the historic centre, turn left at Chedi Wat Sam Pluem roundabout (เจดีย์วัดสามปลื้ม) and continue for about one kilometre then turn right when you see the Persian-influenced Wat Kudi Dao (วัดกุฎีดาว) to your left.

If you want to be off the beaten track doing a meditation retreat in a temple where you'll mainly find Thai people, this is the temple for you. Hardly anyone speaks any language other than Thai. All meditations are in Thai or Pali. It's a very unique and beautiful experience.
Alternatively, it's a beautiful and peaceful place to visit during your stay in Ayutthaya.

Wat Maheyong is mainly of interest to Thai Buddhists who go there for meditation training. The temple buildings and grounds are very beautiful and peaceful. The ancient ruin part of the temple is beautiful, of course, but it is not that impressive if you have seen the other main ruins in town. The main reason to visit out here is if you want to combine it with a trip to the floating market.

Situated outside the historical park of Ayutthaya, Wat Maheyong on the one hand is a compound of ruins, mainly the rest of a large (ordination) hall surrounded by elephant statues. Admission 50 Baht.
On the other hand and side of the road there is a new and busy active temple where a lot of (Thai) people go to meditate/ for retreats.

Visit this temple if you have the time as its all in the surrounding areas of the ruins of Ayutthaya. This place is full of history, so its best to have a Guide or Guide book as language is a problem in Thailand.
Be appropriately dressed as a mark of respect to Buddhism, even if it is very warm.

Serenity must be the theme of this temple complex. It is so peaceful and quiet and well worth walking around and enjoying the beauty of the area. Definitely worth taking the time for a visit!

This is a temple complex that dates from the 1400’s. It was first restored in 1711, and then destroyed again during the Burmese invasion. The ordination hall and several other building are in good restored condition.
