This morning we visited the sacred hill with ten thousand steps. You can go up on foot or by funicular. Given the negligible price of the cable car, the option of going up on foot seems to me to be absolutely to be discarded, also because for the first three quarters of the route you climb steps in the middle of the greenery without even a temple, as they are piled up at the top of the mountain,

It was a huge queue. They have some level of arrangement but lots of people visiting the place for ropeway. We came in queue at 10.30 and upto 3 o'clock we were still in the queue. A total nightmare. Avoid the ropeway for at least next 15 days.

We left from the base of the steps at 6.15am. The first stretch (about 4000 steps) is rather easy and well maintained. The second stretch, after the first temple, is more difficult as the flights of stairs are very long. Once we reached the top we visited the other temples and even in this section the ramps are quite long. Total almost 10,000 steps Unfortunately I climbed with only 1.5 of water and it was not possible to buy more since they don't sell it. We always went down on foot and arrived at the starting point at 1.15pm.

We went on a pilgrimage trip all started from Ahmedabad where our last stop was Girnar. We started early in the morning around 4.00 am. We wanted to reach up to the first point (Tuk) of Jain God Neminath temple. It is a steep climb of 4000 steps. It took us 3 hours to reach up. Steps are of black stones. No paths in between to walk. There are many monkey around which do not harm us nor come behind us to snatch our bags etc. Not recommended for the elderly people who have physical problem but can rent a Doli. Doli rents are very expensive starting from Rs. 7500 for weight up to 70 kgs and 2500 are added for every 15 kgs until Neminath Tuk and return. In case you want to go further up to Ambika (Goddess Ambe Maa Temple) Tuk and Dattatraya Tuk (Lord Dattatraya) rates are much higher because of more steps. You will realise the rent charge is worth every single penny because the way the doliwala carry you and climb up is hats off to them. One cannot get a chair Doli; it has to be pre booked from the doliwalas. On return, my parents took the route to climb down via Sheshavan (as they had Doli’s rented) that is a further climb up (1500-2000 steps more) and then climb down. Return journey was approx. 6000 steps & we came back from the first took i.e. Neminath Temple. If you decide to do Dattatraya Tuk, then plan well in advance as the total return journey will be of 18000-20000 steps and people start trip at 12 am and come back at around 2 pm. Food items like Chips, Biscuits, Aerated drinks, Lime Juice, Tea & Coffee etc. are available in abundance. In addition, there is nothing scary about the trip one can go until Dattatraya Tuk without any fear. The trip is tough up to first Tuk. Later you get used to it. The most difficult part is to climb down. Legs start shivering, calf muscles get sore and tight and you are completely exhausted (Tip: carry relispray and painkiller for instant relieve). In addition, you stay affected for next few days since your legs are completely tired if done without Doli. However, the temple are very beautiful and calm you easily, sit there and relax & pray. All facilities of bathing, lockers etc. are available at the temple premise. They also provide Navksai (breakfast – Khakras, dry bhel, tea etc.) to all devotees free of cost.
Hope people going for pilgrimage trip, my review may help them.

Lord Shri Dattatreya is a shared incarnation of Shri Brahmadeo, Shri Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

The City of Junagadh Municipal Corporation in Gujrat is an erstwhile princely state, which is surrounded by Asiatic Lions’ Gir National Park. From this city at about 5 kms, there situates the Holy Mountain of Giri-Narayan or Girnar. It is the highest peak in Gujrat State. The base is called as ‘Taleti’ in local Gujarti language, where devotees can reach by an auto rickshaw hired from Junagadh. A general fare is around Rs.100.

On this highest peak, there stands ‘Guru Shikhar’ or ‘Datta Shikhar’ at about 10,500 steps. It is believed to be Shri Dattatreya’s every-day Samadhi (deep meditation) place. It can be ascended in about 3-4 hours. The service of a ‘Doli’ or an uncovered palanquin is also available.

En route, after climbing about 4000 steps, devotees initially reach at the first plateau of Jain Teerthankar Neminath Dada Temple. There they can visit beautiful Jain temples carved superbly in white marbles.

Leaving behind those temples, devotees then reach at ‘Ambaji Mata Temple’ located after about the next 3000 steps. As per ancient Hindu Puranas, every mountain had wings and so they would fly hither and thither. When Indradeo, the King of Gods, started to cut those wings, Goddess Ambaji’s (Mata Parvati) brother Mountain Giri-Narayan (or Girnar) hides in the sea near Saurashtra (Gujrat). However, when the Goddess manifests and assures her brother for his safety from Indradeo, the Mountain once again rises from the sea. From that era, the Goddess still resides there in ‘Ambaji Mata Temple’.

After this temple, devotees start their next pilgrimage to the last cliff of ‘Shri Datta Shikhar’. It is at the distance of about the subsequent 3500 steps. In this last phase of climbing, devotees have to cross two mountains. While traveling, they arrive at ‘Kamandal Kund Sansthan’. It is the sacred place where Shri Dattatreya had His severe ascetic practices in the Treta Yuga. The place had water everywhere at that time and so He banged His Kamandalu (a sort of wooden vessel used by ascetics to carry drinking water) there. This made the water to recede and emerged some place for Shri Dattatreya’s penance. For this reason, this place is known as ‘Kamandal Kund Sansthan’. Before initiating His ascetic practices in the Treta Yuga, Shri Dattatreya ignites ‘Dhuni’ (the holy fire). Its flame can be seen on every Monday morning even after all these thousands of years. Devotees believe that Lord Shri Dattatreya materializes Himself in the form of this holy fire. Sages and monks at this place serve oven-fresh and hot food to everybody who visits the place. It is a free service that continues round the clock.

When devotees start their pilgrimage again from the Kamandal Kund Sansthan, at the forefront they see the Holy Peak of ‘Guru Shikhar’ or ‘Datta Shikhar’ on a very narrow cliff. Circumambulating that cliff, they enter a tiny temple of Shri Dattatreya made from corrugated steel sheets, which can accommodate not more than 12-15 devotees inside at a time.

Bowing to Lord’s Holy Lotus Feet and His marble idol therein, devotees forget all their hardships that they happily accept while climbing rigorous 10500 steps. For the devotees, surrendering before Shri Dattatreya there is like a reward to their human birth. They believe this as the ultimate gain of this pilgrimage. From centuries, incessant and strict religious practices are the most important than anything else for a devotee of Shri Dattatreya. They believe that the pilgrimage to the Holy Mountain of Girnar counts as their humble service to their Lord Shri Dattatreya to cleanse their mind and body simultaneously.

A fact should always be reminded every time while ascending this Holy Mountain that not only one’s physical power helps in this pilgrimage but the achievement also depends upon the Divine Grace and the devotee’s utter belief in Him. The sight of many devotees returning back unsuccessfully due to fatigue, cramps, dehydration and vertigo is like a proof and caution.

While climbing the Mountain, devotees need to swallow heavily blowing winds and (or) scorching sun rays. So a head gear, pair of non-slippery footwear and warm clothes is very essential, with a water bottle, glucose powder and some light weight food in their backpack. Food and juicy fruits like watermelons, tomatoes, pineapples etc. and refreshing drinks like sugarcane juice, lemonade and fresh buttermilk are sold at a very reasonable price throughout this pilgrimage.

A care should also be taken not to climb the Holy Mountain alone at night, as the area is enveloped by a jungle with wild animals like lions, panthers etc.
