We did a tour with Uday yesterday. His knowledge and passion for the local area was excellent- we would really recommend a tour with him, even though he is a bit pricier than the government boat tours. 5 stars for Uday. This island is a beautiful place, with a variety of birds and wildlife. 5 stars for the wildlife. However, it was disheartening to see litter on land and in the water. We even saw a local resident through her trash bags into the water. 0 stars for this. Uday goes out in his spare time to collect the litter. However, the government needs to put measures into place to stop littering from happening to begin with. There needs to be processes in place for litter to be disposed of responsibly and with limited impact on this fragile environment. The current situation is just not good enough.

It's situated barely couple of kilometres from the capital city of Goa, Panaji and Mandovi river divides it from the mainland. Public transport is bit of an issue if one wants to visit the nearby Mayem lake or wants to visit Bicholim town. The lush green nature during monsoons is a sight to behold of Chorao island.

We crossed over to the island by ferry. We drove our car into the ferry and were ferried across to Chorao island. What a lovely ride! A great experience. On the island is the Dr Salim Ali bird sanctuary. A mangrove forest through which a path has been laid. A 2-3 hour outing for those inclined towards nature and birding.

We too an early morning boat tour with birdwatching guide Uday Mandrekar with another family of three. The river was quiet and beautiful at 6.30AM and Uday helped us spot so many varieties of birds that we wouldn't ever have otherwise. There were no mugger crocs though as we went out at high tide. The government-run tourist boats are way cheaper (approx Rs.900 for a 10-seater compared to Rs.500+ per head that Uday charges) but I found the experience worth it because - he took the boat down paths that the govt boat doesn't go - he acted as private bird guide and helped us spot and photograph many varieties of birds - he was very knowledgeable about the plant life, the history of the island, the tides, and life in the village and had great stories to share - a private tour is always quieter than a crowded group tour Would not recommend this to anyone who isn't keen on birds and quiet nature-watching.
