I’ve spent a month travelling through Bulgaria and Macedonia and Bitola was a great surprise. Probably the highlight of the trip and spent a lot of my time on Shirok Sokak. A beautiful multicultural city with a great cafe culture and nightlife

Since I retired in November of 2013, from the Toronto Police Sevice (37 years on the street), for the first time in my life, I have now had the time to do somethings, like writing reviews about places I have been.

I have been to Bitola 7 times since 2007, with my Macedonian wife Lidija. I'm 68 years old and Lidija and i have been married since August 2013. Prior to that we were together for 10 years (and never a fight??).

I am Canadian born and raised, each year we travel to Bitola to visit Lidjas Mother and we stay with her for a one month period.

Until I got a recent email from Trip Advisor, I had no idea that what I called the MAIN WALKWAY in Bitola was actually called Shirok Sokak Street.

So out of Respect for that Main Walkway, I decided to do this review of it..

I want to tell you, if you have never been to that Street, you are missing one of the best hidden treasures that Eastern Europe has to offer.

This is a street that wreaks of history, architecture, a walkway with no cars and an atmosphere that is simply something that we as North Americans can not even begin to imagine. Shirok Sokak Street is at a time and place that we in North America have so long since lost a 100 years ago and we will never be able to get back to that beautiful place in time.

I also have to mention, that that street has some of the most beautiful women walking there, that I have ever seen in my travels.

This is a street that is lined with statues, history, numerous outdoor cafes, icecream parlours, clothing shops, shoe stores, outdoor vendors, etc.

As a Police Officer in Toronto, I equate bars to drugs, drunks and trouble. I can honestly tell you that my wife and I have walked that walkay from early evening to the early morning hours and I have never seen a fight, a drunk, or smelled the odour of dope. That just blows me away!!!

About a year and a half ago I read an article in a travel review of Macedonia and it referred to Macedonia as a "hidden Gem in Europe"

If Macedonia is a hidden gem in Europe, then Bitola is the "Mother load".

To this point in time (Oct 2014), Macedonia s not in the European Union, you can eat and party until you drop, and it will cost you a fifth of what it would cost you in an EU Country. Bitola is surrounded by moutains and I have taken 100s of photos each time I have been there, but they pale in comparison to the beauty of actually being there

If you are planning a trip to Europe and want a berautiful country to go to that is safe and inexpensive by all EU standards, do yourself a favour and go to Bitola. I quarentee you will love it and from there you can travel to Ohrid, Malika, Madka, Scopje etc.

Shirok Sokak's Bitola's main street, running in a more or less straight line from the clock tower all the way to the museum. Almost all pedestrian, it's the social hub and highlight of the whole town.

It's romantic enough in the daytime, with the old consulates, the dark river and the famous clock tower in its garden at one end, the little market under the arches at the crossroads in the middle (where you get get a simple, incredibly effective Macedonian-English dictionary), and the elegant art-nouveau, Ottoman-era Turkish Officers' Club standing in its garden at the other.

But at night it becomes even more special, when thousands and thousands of people - children on bikes, couples in love, people alone, gypsies, respectable families, students - walk up and down, up and down, greeting people they know, pausing to chat, and enjoying the cool evening air. I've never seen anything like it in my life, even in Southern Italy.

Join them if you like, or sit down in a cafe by the street and just watch. If you can't find a free table never mind. Sit in a chair at someone else's. This is Bitola; no-one will mind.

After been hiking around in Pelister park this place is perfect for relaxing and enjoying a good coffee. Best part is its lack of tourists, opposed to Ohrid it feels more like being in the real Macedonia.

Cheerful people at the restaurant terraces, in shops, or simply walking down the street: many old buildings with historical flair; typical Balkan atmosphere.
