The Devil’s Nose awaits us beyond the quaint village of Alausi; a defiant outcrop that looks almost impossible to climb down. The train descents, in a breathtaking maneuver, 500 meters in just 12 kilometers across a zigzag craved in the rocks of the mountain, and continues deep into the Chanchan River gorge in the Southern Ecuadorian Andes. The train operates from Tuesdays to Sundays departing from Alausi or Thursdays to Fridays departing from Riobamba.

You will experience gorgeous scenery on this leisurely train ride. I had expected something with more excitement, but maybe that was poor research on my end. The guide gave detailed information in Spanish, but his English version was limited (but that was OK as I...More

We took the devil's nose train trip from Alausi. It costs $32 pp for a 1.5 hour train ride. In between there is a pause of about one hour. The view from the train is nice, but it is not really exciting and mostly very...More

I went with my Ecuadorian family and for them it was a big adventure. For me it was rather boring, just a long ride along a river gorge. The tour guide gave the information in Spanish, so I understood only a little. And the touristy...More

One more thing to cross off my "bucket" list. The train ride was smooth, the scenery fantastic with many photo ops. We stopped for about an hour to eat at the restaurant, visit the museum and take pictures. It was fun, educational and part of...More

Is my second trip to la Nariz del diablo. On the trip 12 years ago the track was not as good, dangerous and people were sitting on top of the cars. This time the trip was smoother and no people sitting on top. Is master...More

Sure it's overhyped, yes it's "touristy", yes they want you to patronize the local people, but overall I'd say it's still worth while. The views are interesting, doing the switchbacks is fun. The young woman attempting to provide English narration was unintelligible, and the crew...More

First, I would say that it is an enjoyable trip. For us, it was a rest for a few hours that broke up a day-long car journey from Riobamba to Cuenca. The train is also very comfortable and the train staff are competent and kind....More

Not sure where your one-way destination is. The train does not go to Cuenca (unfortunately) and the trip to the Nariz del Diablo one way from Alausi would leave you out in the middle of a deep gorge alone. The Indians will... More

I suggest the right side is slightly better going down, as better views of the valley, although both sides are good. Coming back (uphill) is much faster.
