Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A shame that virtually none of the Intepretation was in English. Meant we had no idea what we were looking at. More expensive than Trakoscan and not as good. Parking was a nightmare. No parking at the castle and town car parks wouldn’t take credit cards. Eventually went to a bank to get change. Took us 1.5 hours to park!

We took a walk around the park and the castle. Although it was raining, we didn't stop our walk, because the view is mesmerizing.
Be sure to visit if you find yourself in Varaždin.
The landscape surrounding it, is neatly kept, the grass is cut, the paths are kept clean.

So, why go to Varazdin? It is Croatia's old capital and a wonderful little town. We had been in Zagreb for a little over a week and traveled to Varazdin as an outing away from the city. The tour we traveled with was small and drove along the highway for a bit, but then went on small roads to get to Varazdin. It is a lovely little town, almost absent of cars. The primary reason was to see the Old Castle which is now a wonderful museum with a collection of items representing older times in Croatia. We had an excellent local guide who walked us through the castle exhibits, and though we would still have enjoyed our visit without the guide, he made it even more fascinating. After visiting the castle, we thoroughly enjoyed the time we were given to stroll the cobbled streets of Varazdin, sit in the square for coffee, and take a gazillion photos. One member of our group hiked up to the old cemetery and said she was fascinated. I guess we will have to go back to Varazdin someday to see it! On the way back to Zagreb, our tour group stopped for a late lunch at a vineyard which had wonderful food and of course we were surrounded by rolling hills covered in vines. A really nice day trip from Zagreb.

We were staying in Zagreb for 4 days and decided to venture out a bit, so we drove to Varazdin to see the Baroque style castle (Stari Grad). We parked near the cemetery (which is also worth walking through) and walked over. The castle is quite beautiful and there is a nice defensive hill you can walk around will lots of good views. It's unfortunate to see so much graffiti. I highly recommend you pay to go inside and walk through the museum, lot's of amazing historically objects. The old town is just a short drawbridge walk away, so stop in and grab a pint.

We visited Varazdin unfortunately in a hurry as we spent one day touring in northern Croatia. I really regret not having dedicated a full day to this city. After 2 weeks in Croatia this is one of the top 5 experiences. The city is extremely nice, nearly no tourists compared to Dubrovnik or Split and many interesting things to see and do. It is wonderful for photography, I spent 20 minutes just taking pictures of the old castle.

Varazdin Castle stands next to the city centre, an imposing reminder of when Varazdin was a frontier town defending Croatia from the Turks. Varazdin Castle was rebuilt in 1560 in Renaissance style, and is currently a civic museum with collections of weapons, porcelain, furniture, handicrafts from the 18th century.

This place is so cute and we liked it a lot. Especially the view from outside and the look of the towers, walls and the gate. Amazing and well preserved.

When we visited, there was a Japanese flora display dominating the main courtyard and some of the rooms. The stunning bonsai tree display in the dank great room was a bit depressing as we wished those old trees well in the darkness.
Generally, the mix of styles and displays at this castle are confusing to the visitor. While the exterior is a lovely shape and interior has many rooms available to peek into, the living area is dominated by 18 and 19th c. furniture and clothing (which are great by themselves). Like many Central European chateaus (as opposed to a hrad/ castle which this surely is), the extensive use of the facility in the 19c promoted upgrades that throw off the style and has made what is inside vastly inconsistent with the age and style of the exterior. If you shoot around to other areas of ex-Austria Hungary, the heterogeneity will become obvious. All that said, the castle, grounds, and town are very welcoming and well worth a visit.
For visitors, the grounds are damp even in mid-September heat. Be wise to your footwear and cover your legs to avoid bug bites.

This is a landmark of Varazdin. A must visit place in this city.
Without knowing a word of Croatian language besides greetings and thank you, I used sign language to ask my way there. It is a well known sight for the locals,
This castle looked beautiful from afar. It is within easy walking distance from the town centre. Varazdin is small so it is easy to get your bearing.
It is situated in a park like area of Varazdin.
The inside of the castle housed a museum. I did not go inside the museum. But even just the ground level walk to admire the architecture is very pleasant. It is clean and well maintained.
The only down side of this castle is the graffiti at the back wall of the castle. But then there are lots of Graffiti art in Croatia so I just took it as part of the scene.
It is worthwhile walking to see the castle if you are in this city. It involves a very pleasant walk through the old streets of Varazdin.
