June 2012 • Solo
I traveled to Croatia from Austria by train in late June. If you have the option of renting a car in Croatia I would highly recommend it because public transportation isn't as convenient as other countries. After one night in Zagreb I went by bus to the Plitvice Lakes. I wish I could say more about Zagreb but I only had one evening there and as an Asian female traveling solo I thought it prudent to not walk by myself after dark in any city. I can say that the people in Zagreb were nice and helpful and I did not feel any less safe in Croatia than any other western European country. Out of all the countries I've visited in Europe I had the best exchanges with locals in Croatia; they were by far the friendliest!

I stayed at House Marija which is a 5-10 minute drive to the Lakes. The owner, Marija is absolutely wonderful and I would highly recommend staying here especially if you have a car. I got the 2 day pass to the lakes which isn't really necessary if you have a full day to dedicate to hiking around, but if you have children or older travelers a 2-day pass would probably be a good idea.

The lakes are so beautiful that it doesn't seem real. The walkways are build so that you're literally walking on top of the water. The water is pristine and you can see the fish so clearly. If you are a waterfall nut like I am you will absolutely love this National Park. Every corner you turn is a view better than the last. I went in late June and the weather was perfect for so much walking; sunny and clear but not too hot. I would recommend coming to the lakes for a 2-day detour if you are going to be in Europe, especially London because Zagreb has a lot of flights going to and from there daily. All in all, one of my favorite destination so far! I would highly recommend it!

Took an organised day tour to Plitvice Lakes, the journey by coach from Porec took around 4 and half hours, however it was well worth it. I have never been to such a stunning place, the scenery is gorgeous and the water so clear and blue. I would recommend this trip.

If not the most beautiful, one of the most beautiful places one can visit in his life!!!Try to make this trip with good friends or even better with your other half!!Its just an amazing experience for nature lovers and those who take good care of their physicall and mental health..
One can take the 3 hour walking ''journey'' or even the 8 hour!!!Amazing paths made of wooden lodjes, stares in the trees, little boats that take from one side of the lake to the other, places to get some rest and then take the little train to take you to another spot so you can continuou your experience!!!
Older people just have in mind that it kinda takes good physics and endurance!!

ENJOY!!

The Veliki Slap (aka "Big Waterfall") is a must-see for any visitor to Plitvice Lakes! We arrived at the entrance near the Hotel Plitvice (where we were staying) and took the quick ferry connection to the end of the park where the Veliki Slap is located (10 min ride) OR you can walk along the lake (which we did our first evening in Plitvice). The walk is about a 30 min at a leisurely pace and not very crowded on trail along water.

The pathways & stairs leading down to the Veliki Slap can get crowded at times, so going down there in the early to mid-morning hours is advised. There are multiple photo ops to take in, including a stairwell just to the left of the base of the waterfall area (steep, uneven stairs but provides a nice spot to catch the size of this area). The walk up the series of switchbacks takes about 10-15 min, and guests can take the shuttle back to the other main entrance or parking lots at the park.

Would also advise to bring a light rain coat (as it mists in this area) and good hiking/walking shoes to ensure sure footing on the pathway that leads down to the base of the waterfall (can get slippery with water passing by).

The lower lakes offer a better variety of waterfalls & hiking trails, but the Veliki Slap is not to be missed!

We went in mid June as it is not quite peak season and therefore a lot less busy, on top of that it isn't too hot, it was about 31C June 2013.

We enjoyed the whole national park, this was the main reason we came (Veliki Slap) but found the whole experience with the walkways, viewpoints etc outshone it!

When we got to this we were expecting it to be busy like most of the photos online show but for about 5 minutes it was just us! So we had a good chance to enjoy it.

Some people are complaining about the approx £10 entrance fee but it took us 12 hours to explore the whole place. I would highly recommend not going with a tour group and getting there for 8am and going around the whole place. I don't think I've better spent a tenner to be honest and those that are complaining clearly didn't do any sort of exploring. We found many locations that were incredible and no one was around for a mile or so!

Late afternoon we strolled this area after the groups of tourists had left.
In order to enjoy this beautiful surroundings, it is a must to avoid the crowds.
It is a nice view also from the north side (above the lake) behind the big fall.
We walked back to the main entrance along the lake, for it looked easier than taking the steep path back to the other entrance; from this entrance one can take a shuttle bus to the main entrance.
On the last day after a long walk from the trail north side of the upper lake, we found a sleepy settlement (4 houses?) a mile north of the big fall; seating on a wooden bench we felt as if we were in a fairytale world.

The largest of the falls at the National Park and the most monumental as well. The hike down from Lucka kuca (Park Entrance 1) is fairly easy and there is no shortage of good photo ops either. When you walk around the corner to the falls, expect cool spray and you can really get close to the falls. Expect to get wet. And there is always a rainbow when the suns is out. The hike down to the falls, the falls themselves and the incredible thigh-burn of a hike back up is well worth the visit!

I'm a nature lover and have been to over 60 countries on "photographic safaris"! Plitvice Lakes does not disappoint, if done correctly! Despite haven been discovered by the crowds, namely bus tour groups which seem to outnumber the numerous waterfalls, and there are hundreds of waterfalls among the 16 lakes, our first two hours in the park was PERFECT HEAVEN! We were the only people trekking the Upper Lakes and and it was the beginning of peak season, early June! We entered through Gate #3, referred to by locals as the "back entrance" with free parking a little before the gate. The entire park is free for locals anyway, opens at 9:00 AM. Take the free boat to the entrance of the Upper Lakes and basically walk counterclockwise! Takes three to four hours going slowly and taking lots of photos. At the top, is a picnic area with a restaurant/grill which serves half a baked chicken for just 4 Euro. DELICIOUS! Then, return by the free bus (included in the price of admission) and enter the Lower Lakes from Gate #1. Continue to be amazed at both the beauty and the crowds! Another 2-3 hours..time well spent! Watch for "off-track" trails that will provide more privacy and great photos! We stayed on a small farm near the back entrance, House Nina. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Plitvice Lakes National Park , especially House Nina, and Nina herself, were the highlights of our 32 day trip to Europe!

The nature if beautiful but the corrupt people running the show are awful. Very little money is being reinvested in the park. The big maps have been touched soo many times, they are wore out. Not enough toilets. Signs where to go and where you are are confusing. Prices are way too high. No gourmet food to eat at the park. Typical Croatian corruption!!!!!

We were there for a whole day and we really enjoy! Water, trees, animals, ... and a lot of waterfalls - and this one, the bigest one right at the entering of the park! I was counting: 1.222 waterfalls was on the day we visited
