Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It’s hard to rate this more than 3 stars when the Arsenal is closed and there is so little information on the theatre once inside. On the plus side it is a lovely building, in good condition considering it is 500 years old. It’s interesting to sit in one of the boxes and imagine The Bolshoi performing on the modest stage. Expect to spend about 30 - 60 minutes here. Get a combined ticket for the fortress to make your money go further.

Very atmospheric place in the upstairs section of the Arsenal in Hvar town. Don't be put off by the entrance (which doesn't look like much) - the theatre is worth the small fee to get in. Originally built in 1612 and restored in the 19th century, the theatre is now being refurbished after a number of years of neglect. There are a number of small boxes from 1803 with doors, in a double row, a painted ceiling and the stage with a backdrop painting from 1819. The upstairs is currently roped off but we went on the stage and sat in the downstairs boxes.

The theatre is shut at the moment for renervation which is sad, but it's possible to climb up the outside steps to get lovely views over the main town square.

Located on the second floor, the stairs up to the theater are above the tourist information office. It is on the end of the Pjaca, or Square, nearest to the" Riva" shore front promenade.

There is a 10 Kuna fee to get in which is about $2. When you look at it that way it's worth the visit. This is by no means a must see, but it's a little bit of history. We had a fun time taking silly pictures of each other pretending to be in a play because we were the only ones in here and you have free reign of the stage. For two bucks it's worth the visit. Anything more, no.

A large, imposing building, simple architecture, amazing history. Under renovation so we could not enter. We did visit the model boat display downstairs. Very interesting, intricalte work.

Hvar Public Theater is on the second floor of the Arsenal, on the south side of St. Stephen's Square, near the harbor. It was built in 1612 and was open to citizens of all social status (!). This was unheard of at the time, making it one of the first public theaters in Europe. The theater has been lovingly restored and reopened in 2017. The interior has an open floor with two tiers of box stalls on the side. The ceiling has painted embellishments; look for the Girl Playing an Organ, in a medallion on the eastern side. Original fresco artwork adorns the back wall of the stage. The theater is open daily 9am – 1pm and also during the tourist season (May-Oct) 5pm - 11pm. There is an entrance fee of 10 kuna.
