Overview
More
The fort of Veliki Tabor is one of the most important cultural and historical monuments of secular architecture in continental Croatia, with a unique monumental and authentic fortification structure. Situated at the top of Mount Hum Kosnicki, at 333 meters above sea level, it has dominated the Zagorje area for over half a millennium, during which time the architecture has blended in with nature. The impressive view from Veliki Tabor stretches over the entire Hrvatsko Zagorje area and part of Slovenia. This zero-category monument is one of the most recognizable identities of not only Hrvatsko Zagorje but of Croatia as a whole.

Unlike Trakoscan, this is a real castle built for protection in the Middle Ages. It is gradually undergoing restoration. The exterior is impressive but much of the interior is still empty. Most of the exhibits do not have explanations in any other language than Croatian.

This castle has been recently restored. The restoration is beautiful and the castle is in great shape. However,it lacks life. Most rooms are unfurnished and many signs in museum are in Croatian only. English,French and German would be a minimum. The views from the castle...More

Everything is laid out nicely in English. They have been working on it for over 20 years. A great place for a wedding just very narrow roads to get there.

Veliki Tabor castle is situated on a hill near little town of Desinić just 55 minutes of pleasant drive from Zagreb. It is thoroughly renovated and is great place to visit with children since it looks like a castle from the tale about Robin Hood...More

Veliki Tabor is beautiful castle, and it's great experience overlooking the surrounding hills from there. The museum exhibition is small and build around legend of Veronika Desinićka. The museum is new and there is not really original interior. You can take a walk from Grešna...More

The castle looks to be renovated very recently. The medieval characteristics of the castle are primarily visible in the main building structure with its round towers and battlements. Almost all interior decorations and other small details seem to be lost.

Impressive from the road. Has free grazing deer in fields. Could unfortunately not gain access and due to time limitations we didn't persue entering.
