- janeybaby75Llanelli, United Kingdom95 contributionsThe prettiest placeThis was our second visit to Cavtat. It is such a pretty, relaxing place to stay. We introduced friends to this wonderful place this year and they loved it also. So close to the airport and an hour away by boat from Dubrovnik. There's lots to do around the area but if you want peace and quiet, amazing food with fabulous people, this is the place for you.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 17 September 2023
- AlbertSalichsManresa, Spain22,069 contributionsVery nice coastal old townCavtat Old Town is located near the Dubrovnik Airport and there are some interesting points like churches (St. Nicholas Church or the Monastery of Our Lady of Snow), a very nice promenade close to the sea, a leisure port, some bars and restaurant (like Peco Pastry&Coffee shop), a cemetery with very beautiful views of the surroundings and some pathwlaks. It is a very nice little town to walk and, in our case, to finish the journey in Dalmatian Coast. (See also Cavtat Seaside Promenade, Cavtat Cemetery, Church of St Nicholas, Church of Our Lady of the Snow and Pastry&Coffe Shop Peco)Visited October 2022Travelled with friendsWritten 21 September 2023

A few things to see plenty of watersports and lively at night. Dubrovnik is just a short distance away by boat or bus.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 September 2023
- Paul WHerne Bay, United Kingdom4 contributionsLike a step back in time.Like a step back in time! Cavtat is starting it's journey towards commercialism and as such is still charmingly old fashioned. Traditional restaurants and bars rather than pushy establishments with employees trying to drag you inside their businesses. It is beautiful and the sea is so warm and clear. Just don't expect beaches, sandy or otherwise. This area is rocky and beaches are levelled areas of rock with steps or pool type ladders to the water.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 October 2023

- SWH100Cardiff, United Kingdom1,717 contributionsOne of the most beautiful places I have beenAbsolutely feel in love with Cavtat. It is the most beautiful place. The town is gorgeous. Lovely restaurants, but it’s the views and the water that is to die for. Loved swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding here. The water is crystal clear and so many fish. I didn’t want to get out. Watched the best sunsets in Cavtat. Saw three during our week and they blew me away. Stunning. Would return to Cavtat in a heart beat. We visited Dubrovnik and I was soooo pleased we didn’t stay there. Cool city but Cavtat is just so beautiful and lovely and quiet. There was also so much going on. Each night there was some kind of entertainment - from the summer fair to dancing to a Capella groups. Loved it all. Wished we didn’t have to leave.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 October 2023
- David and Heath... MWest Vancouver, Canada101 contributionsGreat 1/2 day trip from DubrovnikThe Adriana Ferry at €10 each way is a bargain for a 45 minute boat ride past Lokrum Island and three, beautiful towns including a ferry stop at Mlini on the return. Cavtat itself is a great walking town with a wrap around “Riva” on the west side and quaint harbour/marina on the east side connected by a short flat walkway. Lots of food options, but we opted for a lunch at Bouganvillia, a recently awarded Michelin Guide mention indicating fine food and service at reasonable prices. Disabled friendly near the water. Some stairs if you want to explore. Beaches and swimming a short walk to the north side of the west harbour. Tour boats and ferries available right on the Riva. Montenegro is 22 Km’s away.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 October 2023

- CatharineBOttawa, Canada1,640 contributionsSmall but AtmosphericI read that Cavtat began life in the third century BC as Epidaurum, a colony founded by the Greeks from the island of Vis. It was destroyed in the 7th century and occasional excavations have revealed several remains of the antique town. The pretty village of Cavtat grew up in its place. It was discovered by Austro-Hungarian tourists at the beginning of the twentieth century; however, development was slow and fortunately much of Cavtat’s charm survives along the seafront promenade. Unfortunately, there was quite a bit of construction during our visit. Cavtat is set on a horseshoe-shaped bay, defined by two long peninsulas covered in pine forests with the port and a tree-lined promenade in between. While Cavtat’s old town is small, I found it to be very atmospheric. Sloping gently up from the promenade, the narrow streets are full of attractive village houses. We drove to Cavtat from Dubrovnik but it can be easily reached via boats that leave from Dubrovnik’s Old Port – it is cheaper if you purchase a round trip ticket but you would have to return with the same company. Or, you can also reach Cavtat by public bus #10 and the journey will take about 30 minutes. Once we parked, we first dropped in at the Tourist Office. The office was staffed by two people who were singularly unhelpful, never acknowledged our presence and spent their time on their computers. We were the only ones there. Even saying Hello received no response. So we picked up a few brochures and left. The suggested walking path brochure was particularly helpful. Don’t miss the parish church of St Nicholas at the bottom of the hill and the scenic views from Cavtat’s cemetery at the top. Halfway to the cemetery we found The House of Vlaho Bukovac, an art museum. You can see more of Bukovac’s work at the former Rector’s Palace, along with a collection of Roman artefacts. The biggest tourist attractions are located along the seaside promenade. However, I also encourage you to just wander up the staircases that lead to the residential areas. The views are beautiful and it is a nice way to admire some older buildings. Lastly, take the time to just relax and grab a meal, or just a drink at one of the restaurants that line the seafront.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2024

Croatia has so much to offer, but it never ceases to amaze that a town like Cavtat have squeezed every last Kuna out of tourists who fall into the trap of visiting.
It's such a lovely place to go to, but has been ruined by over development of apartments and expensive restaurants. Some of the boats which turn up in the bay may not mind paying over the top, but it's a shameful way to attract people.
The town could be so lively if genuine people were able to take a day trip here and not get ripped of by excessive parking charges, and expensive restaurants.
Lovely place, but don't stop too long and eat somewhere else.

I’m a really well travelled man who has just entered his 50’s. I’ve been and lived all over the world. So why did I find Cavtat disappointing?
I came to Dubrovnik 10 or so years ago before it became a commercial tourist trap and I loved it and Croatia unfortunately those days have gone in Dubrovnik. So I thought I’d give Cavtat a whirl.
Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with the place it’s very scenic and pretty and if you want to spend a week lying in the sun you will love it.
So why such a low rating? Quite simply it’s a tourist trap. Restaurants are average and expensive (£30 for an average steak and chips) beer drinking in or out is London prices. In fact anything bought from a shop or restaurant is priced so over the top it’s extortionate.
The other reasons for the low rating there isn’t much to do there, ok theirs the extortionate boat trips a swim in the sea maybe a bit of canoeing a bit of walking.
Also there is nothing remotely Croatian about Cavtat it’s basically sold itself out to tourism.
If someone was to ask my advice on Cavtat (and many people do because I’m well travelled and give an honest review) is quite simple save yourself half your budget and go to spain because you’ll get everything there as you’ll get in Cavtat just for half the price.

Beautiful little town & well worth a visit. Plenty of cafe's, bars, restaurants & souvenir shops.
Regular bus service to Dubrovnik for 4 euros each way. This drops you just outside the walls to the old town.
Do not make the same mistake we did. Do NOT be persuaded to purchase tickets for the Sea Line water taxis that take you from Cavtat into Dubrovnik old town harbour until the day you actually plan on going. There is no certainty that they will be going as the sea can be too choppy for sailing to be safe. We bought return tickets; 15 euros one way, 20 euros return. The journey takes between 45 minutes to an hour; seems to depend on what the sea is like & it was extremely choppy & quite scary when we did the journey at the end of May. When we disembarked in Dubrovnik, the captain stopped anyone else boarding & sailed off. On our return later in the afternoon to get our return boat back, we learned (from another company) that our boats were all cancelled; that only one company was still sailing, but we would have to buy new tickets to sail with them! There were approximately 45 people on the boat to Dubrovnik, all with return tickets so far as we were aware. As the company failed to run any return boats, or arrange for anyone to be at the harbour to explain what was happening & offer a refund for the return fare, the company were 5 euros in profit for each passenger!

Really charming old town and harbor with plenty of bars and good quality restaurants. There is a really nice chilled vibe here and you can just sit back and relax and watch the world go by. I would particularly recommend at sunset as the colors and superyachts are spectacular.

From the main bus station in Gruz (Dubrovnik) you can get the number 10 bus to take you to Cavtat. It's a 40 minute ride on the bus, for an 8 euro per person return fare. I would suggest visiting Cavtat if you have several days in Dubrovnik and you have done all the main sites in and around the city, and are looking for something slightly different.
Once there, enjoy the tranquil setting of the harbour, and plenty of restaurants to choose from.

We went to see the sunset and parked the car in the port, at 19:46 pm and talked with the parking worker to know where to go. It cost 20kn per hour. After the sunset (50 min after), we realised that we lost the ticket in the way.
When we came back we saw that they had cameras reading the plates, so we talked again with the friendly worker and….he wanted us to pay 600kn. As we got angry, he found the solution by offering us a deal 200kn if we remain silent.
He knew that we stayed 50 min and wanted to rob us.
So we walked and found the ticket.
When we arrived to the machine, you couldn’t pay by card. 2022 and you can’t pay by card in an sophisticated parking? We had to get some money and pay the taxes.
The feeling was terrible. Last time in cavtat, and Croatia.

Cavtat is a beautiful town to visit and spend time. It is a small town with a very relaxed atmosphere. Plenty of choices for great places to eat mostly situated around the harbours with stunning views.
It is close to the nearby Dubrovnik airport and easily accessible by a short taxi ride
A 45min boat ride will take you too Dubrovnik with its stunning old town
Water polo played in the outdoor harbour by the local kids a source of great entertainment.
The harbour area is quite and used for leisure activities and with luxury yachts coming and going during the day which are great to watch
Would highly recommend for a relaxing stay.

We took a bus from Dubrovnik for an unguided tour day in Cavtat and it was very well spent! We started out on the perimeter trail, then cut across to check out the Račić Mausoleum. Interesting cemetery and mausoleum, serene with amazing view of the sea. From there we walked down into town, explored, had lunch then went back to the beginning of the trail and did the whole thing. The views are phenomenal with the waves crashing against the cliffs and Dubrovnik in the distance. We took the small local ferry ride back and enjoyed the shore-hugging ride.

Cavtat is an absolutely beautiful picturesque little village by the sea. Lovely friendly people, historic unspoiled buildings, pleasant bars and restaurants. Great to sit in a bar overlooking the bays watching the world go by. Not sure what there is to do when it rains. Drinks and food is reasonably priced. Local beer about 30kn a pint wine a out the same. Local bus to Dubrovnik 25kn each way about 30 mins and every hour.

In most places you can ask to taste the wine before selecting. I found if you also ask for recommendation they are very helpful too!
Have a lovely time.

I was just wondering what is the price of a beer in cavtat please?
I have seen some reviews with prices but they are old reviews so looking for a more current price!
We are looking at going all inclusive but will want to be able to have drinks at a local beach bar :-)

Between £2 to £3 depending on type of bar, £1 for 1/2 litre in supermarket. Not all bars serve food.

Is there a “best” day to visit Dubrovnik?
Thinking it would be best to visit on a day the cruise ships aren’t there.
Thanks.
Written 14 September 2018
I think Cruise ships visit every day.!!
Best advice is go early. We took the boat from Cavtat, 100 kunas return, left at 9:15am. Takes 45 mins direct.
Arriving at 10 am it's reasonably comfortable regarding crowds. By noon however it's fairly hectic but there are many places to eat and drink or eat your own picnic.
We have visited 3 times and still love it, definitely worth going. Enjoy...

I am taking my friend who is 74 and we are staying in an apartment near Saint Nicholas Church in the old town. Is this area fairly central and flat for walking. Also do you know if there is a food market in Cavtat during the week? Any other tips would be appreciated. Many thanks.
Written 5 June 2018
The area around the harbour is flat but there are lots of steps up from there into the narrow streets. It's flat to walk over to the other harbour and around the bay. There was a small market with some fresh produce one day and further along towards the monastery there is a nightly market selling clothes, bags, pictures etc.
