Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great area for shopping, dining, sightseeing, and enjoying the views of ancient Chinese architecture. During the Qing and Ming dynasties, it was an major junction station of the Ancient Tea Horse Road.

A lot of peoples dance around this area. A great place to spend at evening. Local people very friendly to invite dance with them. It's a good try to blend with the local culture.

Everyone arrives here and this is a place to sit, watch and be. There are often traditional dancers and the place bustles. This is is just part of the fun of Dayan - if you are lost head for the square.

The square is the centre and an ideal place to orientate yourself. Here we found banks, ATMs and a tourist information office. Doesn’t have the atmosphere of the small streets and alleys.

Daytime, there is a group of elderly people dancing in ethnic outfit and dancing. It makes this street more lively more attractive.

We spend our time walking up and down the old town during the day and night!

The night is hot with people and music. Great night clubs with big bright stages that you can see from the window when you stand outside.

Shangri-La old town is the opposite. Quite and serene. With locals dancing folks at the square.

We enjoy the morning market call the zhong Yi Shi Chang (忠义市场). Huge market place! Not a lot of ready food thought if you are looking for breakfast. (Or maybe we are don’t know where).

We chance upon a dough selling shop that sell a fantastic cup of soya + peanut drink, he would put this 2 cooked beans with warm water and grind out a very frangant cup of drink!

By the way, if you plan to go to see the Yu Long snow mountain or impression show, during the weekend, better book from the travel agency. we will told there is no tickets going directly to the place. A young couple was not able to get in on a Saturday and therefore try the travel agent for Sunday tickets. This is what we experience, it could be seasonal though.

Not so impressive on its own but the Square Street is the Center is the old town where the river runs through Lijiang divides from 1 to 9 streams and if you visit old town, you will very much likely end up at Square Street no matter where you turn.

It is a Square that leads to all parts of winery allies of the old town. The square itself has been much modernised and commercialised filled with food vendors or tourism offices - lots of dancing or singing or bonfire at nights and very busy and hustling.

Avoid this place if you are looking for peace or quietness.

This Sifang Street Square is the centre of Lijiang old town with plenty of shops catering to the visitors. There was dance performance by the friendly Naxi tribeswomen and visitors can join in the fun. We were here during the low season and so many traditional inns and hostels to choose from with rates at almost half of what it would be during peak seasons.
Food tends to be higher priced than outside of this area. Weather was cool 24°C but evening chilly 13°c, most hotels/inns have electric blankets/bed. We stayed 2 nights here and moved to newer part of Lijiang nearby, fantastic market Zhongyi wet markets with lots of vegetables, fruits, food, etc.

From there to the water wheel, Dongba street is the main street, take parallel nar street in the morning for a quieter stroll by the canal.
On square street, small show of Naxi dancers every day at 2 and 7:30 pm.
