An awesome chance to experience and help preserve the Naxi music.

They have selected their pieces exceptionally well, playing a range of styles and nothing felt 'too long'- they held my attention so well that it barely seemed like an hour of playing! It was great to see the range of instruments and voices and loved the little ticket booklet that explained in English some of the history. Each piece was also introduced in Chinese and English by the host. Some of the players were 80+ years old- amazing! The tickets come in 3 price ranges but sadly there were only 20 people in the audience so we could basically sit were we liked. Even though it is on the main street, we couldn't hear any outside noise. A must-see unique experience.

It is all of the above, but I would like to add that the evening I was at a concert, there was no disturbance from other sounds. It is like going into an old world theatre which only added to the atmosphere of the old world music that was being played. I would not have missed it for the world. Of our group, I was only one interested in going and our independent tour guide, Brandon (phone 150 122 320 26), escorted me there and was there to walk me back to the hotel after the show. Absolutely wonderful.

This is a very unique music concert, which happens daily 8-9:30pm.
1. Century old music lyrics
2. Century old musical instruments
3. Over 6 musicians are over 80 years old

The concert is facing fierce competition from modern technology entertainment venue. The music band composed of around 20 musicians. They play all kinds of musical instruments. Some of them even play more than one kind. It is a true treasure in the old town Lijiang. Price tickets is around RMB$120-160. The musicians are all very passionate to share their skills and knowledge. Very sad to see not too many young people are interested in this form of art. The old town is full of similar shops, eat eat eat, buy buy buy, if you are tire of all of these, go and support this century old music group and preserve their valuable heritage.

Go now or it might disappear soon. Highly recommended!! ^^b

Don't miss this unique and wonderful orchestra of elderly gentlemen playing interesting and haunting music from the Han and Tang Dynasties, mainly on ancient instruments. The orchestra has travelled the world to acclaim and performs nightly, but sadly when we were there there were only 12 people in the audience. How disappointing for these lovely folk. It consists of elderly men in long purple silk gowns and 5 members are in their 80s and one is 86. The program is mainly instrumental but there is also some singing, all beautiful. Each item is introduced and explained in both English and Chinese. Go and see it while you can.

This is a great chance to listen to traditional Naxi music, as well as learn a bit about it. There are ensemble and solo pieces (that give a better indication of the individual qualities of each musical instrument), and I preferred the latter but it was all very good actually. Guests are given a little booklet on arrival giving lots of information on the particular instruments and general cultural history. For example, lots of the instruments were saved during the Cultural Revolution only by being buried by their owners. The one downside was noise pollution from outside but it wasn't too much of an issue. However, I'm not sure how long this will continue as a nightly performance: even during peak-season when I went, sadly the theatre was maybe 10% full and about half of the group is over 70-years old. So see it while you can!!!

This music is a dying art and the members of the band are mostly elderly. It seems that this is not as popular as it used to be but this kind of thing should be supported.

The music was varied and so beautiful. The host spoke both Chinese and English so you could follow the program. The songs were translated as well. It was only about and hour and 15 minutes long but it was perfect.

Definitely recommended for a different night out!

This is my 2nd visit, a decade apart before there was "Impression Lijiang". That was a full house then and tonight it's less than 30% full.

The music is as good, well reserved materials since Tang and Song Dynasty. Mr Xuan, leader of the band since he got out of 20+ years from the labor camp of the cultural revolution in 1978, dedicates his life to a 1,000+ years of living traditions which are very few left elsewhere in China, together with a group of faithful musicians as old as 80+.

Do recommend this authentic cultural performance performed by the sincere Naxi tribe over a modern Chinese manifesto and its artificial interpretation of Naxi, 'Impression Lijiang'. Besides, 'Impression Lijiang' might just gave an incorrect profile of Naxi and Pai tribes - they are peasants, but they are also well self-educated from the family traditions; typical Naxi people have one gift or two in e.g., handwriting, instrument performance, drawing, ... which are not common to be found with average Chinese peasants.

The daily concert of Naxi Music is one of the most remarkable things I have ever heard. Ancient songs played on antique instruments by very elderly musicians, who buried their instruments to preserve them during the cultural revolution. I promise you, you have never heard anything like it!

The music performed by the Naxi Orchestra is a phenomenal experience. The performers, who are carrying an ancient cultural torch forward, play music from past dynasties on antique instruments.

We absolutely wanted to attend a performance by the Naxi Orchestra. Many of the musicians are above 70, some above 80 and the oldest 84 years of age. The program consists of very old ceremonial music pieces, which may not appeal to everyone. Yet, we considered it a very worthwhile visit.
