Not sure whether to put this under "Lijing Gate" or this attraction, as the reviews more or less describe the same thing, although the Lijing Gate is a specific complex of buildings. In any case, most of the reviews under this plus the Lijing gate describe the Luoyang 'old town' area. It worth visiting for a few hours. The easiest way to figure out what area is covered by the 'old town' description is to look at the Tripadvisor map of attractions (or at Google maps). Once you locate the Lijing gate, you will see a square area about 2 km on each side surrounded by a canal or moat, with the Lijing gate on the western side of the square. This area surrounded by the moat is the 'old town'. Anything within this area is at least somewhat worth exploring. The most interesting parts of the area are the shopping areas, as there are a lot of small shops selling quite a variety of things. One of the most interesting shopping streets starts at the Lijing Gate and heads eastward from there, but there are many other shopping streets as well. I didn't experience any pressure to buy; shopowners were generally happy to let people browse. The architecture is also interesting. Having a better acquaintance with the area now, if I were to return I would likely also visit the Drum Tower and the Louyi Ancient City (also shown on the Tripadvisor map, in the southeastern part of the 'old town'), as they are quite close to the main shopping streets and look interesting.

Feel like eating crunchy locusts or scorpions? Do you prefer these sweet little candied apples - or are these quinces? Do you feel more like this tasty tofu or is it to spicy? This market, in the early evening enjoyably crowded, is a sensational, vibrant and exciting experience, it was one of the highlights of this journey that touched many highly rated Chinese highlights. The only western faces we saw was a group of tourists, hunted by their stressing guide - a common image in China, btw.

This "old street" was hidden behind the shops of main road. It was quite a long street...more than 1 km, I belived, with various display on sell...lollies made on spot, Chinese colourful biscuit made on spot, so many foods shop / stores that we are at lost which to try but eventually we did tried one of the beef soup with added noodle...reasonable, nice, simple food. Day time, probably only half the stores / shops are open, so preferably go after 5pm, but also more people. Just be aware of the electric bike rooming along the street..

I am Chinese from different province. I have traveled many cities. It has been more and more rare to find such a live old town that local folks are living in, because most old towns I found are either over commercialize or rebuild for tourism. There are many the interesting vendors on the street selling all sorts of local/hand made crafts, antiques, food and curiosities. Way beyond what one may expect.

Lijing Gate, Luoyang Meishuguan, LuoYang LaoCheng LiShi WenHua GuJie

Now I may have this wrong but as far as I can see these three all link up, along with the bell tower gate at the West end.

Near the centre of Luoyang are two “old streets”, “Market streets”, “pedestrian streets”, pick your name, they cross each other with Meishuguan running East to West and the other running North to South. Accordingly there are 4 main entry points.

The old East gate, “Lijing Gate” is the most impressive and you can go up onto the wall there if you wish. The West gate is apparently also a bell tower, although entrance to the tower appears to be restricted. Be aware that the West end of the road seems to be mainly a garment industry region.

The North entrance brings you directly into the razzamatazz of the street food vendors and lots of hanging red lanterns. The South entrance is much more basic and feels a lot more real and dare I say impoverished.

If snacks are your thing then take the North entrance and experiment as far as you digestion will allow. As commented elsewhere, do take a good look at the general hygiene, cleanliness and age of any oil in use.

For me I loved the section walking from the East gate to the intersection. Sure there are the usual tourist tat places, amusement places, food outlets, but also real businesses with guys making a living NOT from tourists. (The guy forging coil springs was my highlight). It’s worth visiting this place twice, once in the daytime and once and night. It’s like 2 different places.

One word of warning, if you’re going late evening, go as a group or a couple at least, keep together and in sight of each other; DO NOT wander off the main streets. There are a number of anecdotal tales of woe doing the rounds, particularly featuring young western ladies. I cannot answer for the truth of these.

Its a long street selling various souvenirs and snacks. For souvenirs wise, I do realised they are cheaper here than in Xi’an so you may wanna buy more here.

Old Chinese street with many shops, some restaurants and people wanted to sell you something. What is particular it’s the presence of many brushes shops and paper shops or articles made of paper. Parallel to this old street there is a new one with many red lamps where after 6,30 they sell any kind of weird food: scorpions, insects, turtles and just traditional food like Chinese soups and pastries. If you have seen Xi’an Muslim zone this one will seem very poor but for a evening walk is fun anyway.

Owned by a rather eccentric artist named Tang Ge. Artistically pleasant and local. A good person to ask for good food places too. His assistant speaks good English and able to explain the various history of pottery and their art well. Bought a few tea or sake cups, all handmade and stands out well.

This narrow street offers a lot. Not just for the many photo opportunities, but also the many varied (small) shops, snack stalls and more. But also the many flags gives you a special image. I haven't seen this in other city centres.
