(For gardeners, this would rate five stars rather than four). This is primarily a research garden and storehouse for the national gene pool of peonies, also a breeding garden for developing new varieties of tree peonies. Since tree peonies originate from China, and their cultivation started in this area hundreds of years ago, this is a logical place to site such an institution. However, since the subject is peonies, this garden can't help being very beautiful when the peonies are in bloom, in April, probably reaching their peak in the second week of April. And this place is huge! According to information on various websites, the site covers around 40 hectares and has several hundred thousand peony plants. However, the primary display areas are smaller and can be covered in one to three hours, depending on the level of interest. Some areas are covered with netting during bloom time, to prolong the bloom. These parts are the most intensively cultivated and most floriferous areas of the garden. Note that there are two primary display areas, one north of the highway (the main one) and one south of the highway. There are maps near the entrances, but no English language directions on the signs; however, the maps are mostly self-explanatory and still helpful. Within the garden itself there are some English-language signs which explain what types of peonies are growing in the various parts of the garden. This is primarily a Chinese tourist destination (and a major one - the park was quite crowded in the mid-April peak season), but there were a few tourists speaking other languages, so it's not completely off the Western tourist track. I came here with a guide, so I can't comment on how easy it would be to get here with a taxi or public transportation.

We happened to be there during the Peony Flower Fesival.
It was great to see so many people enjoying themselves. There was a lot to do for children.
For us the highlight was the performance of classical music with old instruments accompanying lots of singers.

It was something out of this world to see all the different peonies . I went to Luoyang in the first week of May and although it was to late to attend the peony - show there were still some beautiful flowers to see . It was well worth the visit . Next time I will contact people in Luoyang to ensure that I am in time for the Festival of peonies in the city .
The premises was clean with helpful staff . Unfortunately nobody understood English

We arrived in Luoyang pretty late in the peony flower season and only the International Peony Garden (being in a higher place and cooler) still has many varieties and colors of peony flowers in full bloom. Perfect for photo enthusiasts!

This doesn't take much of your time so its worth a visit when you are in Luoyang. The peonies were nice and beautiful as we were there at the right time (Beginning of April). The walk/stroll in the park is nice as the atmosphere is clean and free from noise and dust.

Spring time in Luoyang. We arrived as early as 9am . The air was fresh. What fascinated all of us was the vast land full of multi coloured peony flowers牡丹花。We jumped with joy. Cameras were in actions. White, pink, red, yellow, mixed coloured peony flowers full blossoms. That was the happiness experience I ever had because I love flowers. Dear readers, put this into your iternery when you next visit Luoyang.

Good that we come here, but I did expect something bigger. It is true the flowers are nice and we got here at the right timing but it nothing to compare with gardens in Netherlands fir example.
1 hour is ok for the visit

We were by chance in Luoyang in the period of the festival. It was only a park with a lot of flower, however I'm a fan of botanic gardens in general... Peony is the most important flower in China (you find this pattern on dresses, tableware etc.),so it is understandable why Chinese people love this park, but for me it was nothing special.
