Went in oct. not many people. It is big and made up three areas: Mountain, Lake and plain. Nice to have a stroll or take the boat ride along the lake. Kids will like it. In the mountain area, you can see deer and squirrels. We only spent 4 hours there. If possible, plan a bit more time and you can slowly enjoy the views. There is no restaurant inside though, lunch would be a problem. Hardly see any vending machine as well. Suggest bring some snack and drinks in. …

Clean, not many tourists so it is a better Chinese experience and not as packed as Beijing summer palace.

This is a good park with peaceful lakes. However, I became bored with it. The place was unremarkable and certainly not worth a special trip up from Beijing.

With the help of chinabusguide.com we could easily find a bus connection from Beijing to Chengde. It took some times to find the bus station Beijing Sihui. Our hotel was on the same road as the station but for some reason, before we left the hotel, we knew the address but not how far it would be. As the road is long, after some time, we started to ask people on the street and one told us to take the bus. This was very helpful as I now know, that google maps says it takes 1 hour on foot. The ride was comfortable. Once arrived we took a taxi to the palace area. The driver said the price in advance: 100 yuan, if I well remember. Well worth it and a little bit cheaper than the way back, where another driver asked the price of his taximeter. Between the palace area and the temples around, we also took a taxi, which was very cheap and practical. Indeed the parc of the palace is so big, that there is few time left in a day trip from Beijing to see more. Apart from the summer palace, we managed to visit Punning si and see from outside the Potala Palace, before we got back to Beijing with one of the last busses leaving at around 5:30PM. The visit of the garden of the summer palace was very pleasant, even in November. But if you visit the garden of the summer palace in Beijing and e.g. the Prince Kung‘s Mansion, you will have already seen similar garden architecture. In Chengde it was very peacefull, in Beijing not always. This was a clear difference. One more difference was the temples around in a Tibetan architecture style. Alltogether a nice day trip from Beijing if you have a little extra time.…
