We ended up in Jiuxian because our lodging was here, but frankly, anyone that comes to china sees plenty of cities. You come to Yangshuo to see the area that Jiuxian is. Mountains, rivers, rice paddies, greenery, hikes, peaceful farming village. NOTHING COMMERCIAL. It is amazing and should be a UNESCO world heritage site. All this and you can get excellent lunch or dinner or just a drink in a cool environment at the Secret Garden hotel if you are not staying there.

Jiuxian village was a fantastic find on my travels - it retains the authenticity of "old China", and provided a great insight into traditional rural life. The preserved buildings were a real delight to explore - a photographers dream! The surrounding countryside is simply stunning, and there are so many different ways to explore it - hiking, cycling, or bamboo rafting. The friendliness of the locals made me feel so welcome, they are obviously very proud of their village (and rightly so!), and the atmosphere was so unlike other "model villages" I've visited in the past. I would recommend a visit to Jiuxian for anybody looking to escape the hectic overblown tourist trap of Yangshuo, only a few kilometres, but a hundred light years away from the gorgeous Jiuxian.

The whole valley of the Dragon river is amazing. The mountains, the fields, everything so green. About 8 kilometers from yangshuo is the village of Jiuxian. In the back set against the mountain there is a whole set of old (maybe 200 years) mansions. Courtyards, small alley lanes and lots of majestic buildings with beautiful details. It s a pity that some of the house are turning into ruines but there are still lots in good condition and i noticed that there are people restoring buidings as well. You can keep on cycling from jiuxian all the way to the Dragon bridge, which seems to be famous, but i am not sure for what and why it was built there. The half round bridge makes a great picture though.

This village is well worth visiting for its lovely Qing Dynasty buildings and breathtaking scenery. We cycled around the area, took a bamboo raft ride, visited the Dragon bridge and took hundreds of photos. A great day in the countryside.

This village is probably the only one near Yangshuo that still contains so many beautiful grey brick buildings. I visited the village several years ago and was worried its lovely buildings would be destroyed, like so many other places nearby. This time I travelled with my family and was happy to discover that an enthusiastic South African has begun preserving as many of the houses as he can and has opened a gorgeous boutique hotel here. Definately worth a visit if you fancy a unique experience.

We cycled along the Yulong River and explored this ancient village. Surrounded by karst mountains with cobbled stone alleyways, houses with ancient tiled roofs and intricately carved wooden doors and windows still stand. Villagers as ancient as the houses still tend the rice fields or sit at their doorway picking flower petals to dry in the sun. It is as if time had stood still here. We stopped by the Secret Garden Cafe for a drink and to soak in the magic of this place.

Our tour guide (Wendy Li, who I highly recommend - contact me for her information) brought us here in a tut-tut (motorbike with benches for us to sit) because the bike ride would have been too difficult given the age of our children. It is not to be missed. The children were a little young to appreciate seeing buildings so old and beautiful but we loved it.

I went there twice, both times on the way to the Secret Garden. What impressed me, was it was quiet, peaceful, and not crowded. It is in a peaceful setting near the Yulong river, with scenery of rice paddies on the one hand, and some karsts on the other hand. I saw a few villagers doing and living their lives. But there was a lot more going on with Chinese people doing life on the little road, before the turn off on the even smaller road leading to the Jiuxian village and the Secret Garden. I think I needed to spend more time there to really get the feel of the village and understand it fully. If I could have talked my wife into staying in the Yangshuo area longer than the 4 days we were there, I would have tried to experience the village more by staying in the village at the Secret Garden hotel a day or two, which (if I understood correctly) is a 200 old Qing dynasty set of buildings fully restored and renovated to keep the original architecture intact. It is interesting to us to have learned that the architect and restorer of the hotel buildings decided to come, settle, and work in the Yangshuo area after traveling the world for 15 years.

I absolutely agree with all of the previous reviews! This is the way to see authentic China...
I can only add to this that to further enhance your experience you may consider staying at the beautifully restored Secret garden Boutique hotel like we did (please see my review).
It's one of a kind accommodation which is also very affordable. I hope this trend will catch up and they will restore more houses...

My girlfriend and I were staying at Yangshuo. We had the bad luck to get there during the national holiday of the 1, 2 & 3 of may... So it was literally impossible to walk on the main spots of the town, like the west street. But the good thing (and bad of course too) about chinese people, is that they will always go all together to the same spot at the same time. So we rented some bikes, and went for a ride to the west direction, to the Yulong River. It's amazing, you ride 200mts, and you're alone in the middle of nowhere, with those amazing mountains, rocks, rivers and ancient towns. Once you get lost of all the massive tourists, you'll get to know and enjoy this gem.
Jiuxian is the best of all of the towns. When you go by the main road (which is a very narrow road anyway) you can't really see much. So you have to get inside the town by some of the paths that are there, and you'll get to see this lovely and cozy ancient town.
Just follow the signs of the Secret Garden Café. And if you can, take a hot chocolate in that place! It's so relaxing...
It's really worth going there, and do it by your own, biking.
