We were less interested in the shops but more the old architecture and narrow alleys that make for great photo ops. Came once in evening and once during the day and while there are a couple of very "commercialized" streets, overall a great way to spend the afternoon. We also took a break in one of the cafes and great way to spend an afternoon.

I was in Tunxi/Huangshan area for two days, and both evenings the guide (William Hu - recommended) took me here. The first evening was just to explore. It's an interesting area, especially because of the restored but old Huizhou architecture. There are a variety of shops selling things like tea, writing materials, furniture, baked goods (excellent flaky pastries), some clothing, etc. You can explore on your own, and will likely enjoy it. However, it does help to have a guide to explain some details on what is being sold in some of the stores that would be less familiar to North American tourists, for example writing materials and different kinds of ink.
The second evening we came down here for supper. There are several very good restaurants. I'm not sure how easy it would be to order food without a guide, though; this is not Shanghai, and not many people speak English.
If you are there in the evening when it is dark, walk the one or two blocks down to the river, as many of the buildings along the river are beatifully lit up.

We stayed in Tunxi at the Xinan Country Hotel this August 2016.
From there we walked to the ancient street along the river for around 10-15 minute which by itself was really nice (not far from the adjacent park I've described in a separate review here).
The street is really beautiful, it does look ancient and so do most of the shops.
We saw few western tourists and mostly Chinese tourists and it was not overcrowded as some reviews here had mentioned.
It has all kind of shops selling jewelry, wooden items, carved stone stamps, fans, even clothes.
It also has of course and as usual all kinds of eateries from traditional Chinese cuisine, pastries (only butter) and till the inevitable Mc Donald's.
You can buy there all the regular souvenirs but don't miss the tea shops and especially the Chinese ink and brushes shops which are worth stopping by.
Just look at the pictures i have attached as I always do so you can catch the atmosphere there.
Bottom line no doubt the place is for tourists, still it is a real must in Tunxi since these streets are certainly the reason you stayed there (probably on your way to the Yellow Mountain) ...
So, since you're already there, I definitely recommend a 1 or 2 hours stroll ... plus a meal of course.

Tunxi old town does not charge any entrance fee (unlike other old towns nearby like HongCun and Xidi - RMB85 each).
Tunxi town is much bigger than the other two old towns. Tunix is just a normal old town. Touristy, with many commercial food outlets and shops. Many nearby hotels and guesthouses and near to bus and train stations providing cheap accesses to Mt Huangshan (by bus RMB18) , HongCun (RMB17), Xidi (RMB15).
In comparison to old towns like HongCun and Xidi, I would give Tunxi the thumb-up. Hongcun and Xidi are only very pictureous outside (but the inside consist of narrow old walk-paths of typical old village) - entrance fee too expensive and not justifiable. Well, probably OK for those who have not been to an old china village. There is no buses from HongCun and Xidi to Mt Huangshan directly. However, a private car (RMB100) can fetch through the mountain roads (very scenic though - see pictures) to Mt Huangshan

If you have limited time and need to prioritise then I would head for one of the surrounding villages other than here. Yuliang (Shexian County) has an amazing old street (not so commercial) which runs along the river to a 1400year old dam. Or visit Mukeng which is a lovely old village in Yixian County surrounded by bamboo forests. (You can literally drop in here - a flying fox takes you across the valley to the base of the village). Also Hongcun, Nanping, Xidi, Guanlu, Tangmo etc. So many beautiful villages in this area so hard to decide on what to see and do. I have been to this old street twice now - very similar to other 'old' streets in China - losing its authenicity to rigorous tourism. I would rate it as 'good' though - problem is the system jumps from 'average' to 'very good'. Good restaurants down the arch end of the street and watch for the street vendor who has turned his wonton soup into theatre.

I have toured many old towns of China (almost each county will surely have at least, one). I feel Tunxi Old Town not as populated with tourists and the people are very laid-back. It is serene, down-to-earth and liveable. Love this old town!
Remember to buy the small little yellow chrysanthemum flowers back to brew tea. They are very tasty. TIP: How to choose - Choose those little one closed up and have not blossomed yet. A cupful with 3 litres of water with some rock sugar cube chill your day!

The area is nice for having dinner and strolling around in the evening as the streets light up and it becomes very picturesque. At first it seemed to scream "tourist", but it is an ACTUAL ancient street and market area, now updated and modernised with a very commercial feel while still preserving much of the ancient architecture. There were food shops and handicraft shops and everything in between. We found the shopkeepers mostly friendly and willing to talk about their products without engaging in any hard sell techniques. Variety of products was good. This would be a good place to stock up on souvenirs as we found prices to be mostly fair, without the hyper inflated tourist markups of other cities.

The fresh, crisp mountain air is evident here, reminded me of katoomba back home. Stayed here one night and had dinner in the street at one of the little restuarants. First thing I noticed was NO PEOPLE!!! Finally, a place to have all to yourself, excellent chinese handcrafts and architecture on display here as Huangshan is primarily full of very talented artists and sculptors. Watching a guy paint a detailed picture inside a glass egg by putting a paintbrush through a tiny hole was unbelievable. The food was good, cashew nut chicken and a bbq type onion, capsicum and meat dish went down well. Air quality was as good as Australia here, and considering I saw very few people and the artistry and cleanliness and ambience of this area, I enjoyed it more than Hangzhou.

Lots of interesting looking buildings, great restaurants and nice shops. Mostly car-free, except for taxis. Nice place to wander at night and there is free wifi in several cafes.
