A protected area, you can't walk over this terrain anymore, but that doesn't matter, the views by themselves are amazing.

It's a salar located 35 Km after Laguna Miscanti in the south direction. You can enjoy a fantastic panoramic view from the observatories. The place is cold during morning with winds.

The Piedras Rojas are a natural break in the geological rock formation representing an iron rich layer that stands out from the surrounding rocks. While you can no longer walk up to them, the contrast provides an impressive vista.

We didn't think much of the Red Rocks at this location but the views over the lake to the surrounding hills were starkly beautiful. It was a long drive from San Pedro but we thought it was worth it once we got there.

This may have been 5 stars but unfortunately las Piedras Rojas are closed for now. Apparently some tourists damaged the area and the locals closed access to going out to the Piedras. You can still stop and view the area from a distance with some...More

I can confirm that it has been closed. I drove out there with my wife Apr 8th 2018 (along with visiting other spots from the top 10). A grader or bulldozer has been used to block the road into Piedras Rojas and signs are posted...More

It's a shame to learn that tourists are no longer allowed to walk to this place anymore. My wife and I feel lucky and privileged to have visited this site in April last year. We visited Piedra Rojas as part of a day trip with...More

I was told by numerous tour operators (March 29th 2018) that entry is now closed to this site. One can still visit but only to a lookout point so they are not bothering to take the tours all the way there anymore.

Because of a recent stupid tourist who made tyre marks , you can't walk to this place anymore . Beautiful place for photography. At 4200 m above sea-level, watch out for altitude sickness

We booked with Cosmo Andino quite some time ahead but I'm sure you can give it a chance while in San Pedro . Some tours or visits are fully booked in advance.. Have a nice trip !
