Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We ended our tour to La Serena at this location. Busy, clean, plenty of vendors, locals and tourists. The market is located both indoors and outdoors. The indoor section is located in a colonial building that oozes charm. An abundance of produce and products available. Plenty of restaurants, souvenir shops, artesan outlets. Somewhat pricey; we had a feeling that there were two pricing structures, for locals and for the tourist. Purchased a magnet as a memento.

Don't expect to be blown away at La Recova. Things are pretty simple with the same ol' crafts that are scattered across Chile. If you want something original, I would advise to go outside the market to the artisanal tables scattered around the outside courtyard. Here you will find hadmade jewelry, pottery, baskets, paintings, etc. La Recova has food upstairs as well as a paid bathroom. To save some dollars, skip eating at La Recova and instead eat at the supermarket right to the market. You can eat for $3 to $4US which will include your selection of meat, potatoes and a small drink.

Fruit and veg downstairs selling by the kilo only (don't ask for a half kilo). Open in the centre, there was a quartet of minstrel musicians and performers there. Another space had a Paraguayan harpist and a third space had a 'free' piano at which a young student practiced. Upstairs are shops selling clothes and a number of restaurants vying for the lunch trade. A place full of life and energy and worth a visit.

It is a typical place of La Serena, for its craftsmanship and souvenir shops. The bad thing was lunch in the restaurants what is on the second floor, we went to Ruth's balcony, it took 45 minutes to bring the food, raw reineta, we asked to change it and brought it on the same plate; loin with cold mushroom sauce with a bad rice that cost 4000 pesos. Itinerants wander and people begging for money at all times. Really a bad experience. Expensive and bad.

Be sure to bring Chilean pesos. They only accept credit cards in a few stores. They do not want US dollars as their banks may not accept them.
There were lots of interesting bits and some gems. I found a crèche made in the local area. There was a wonderful variety of items. Try out your Spanish and they will try out their English. Be friendly because all the vendors in the market are also friendly and very nice.

This not an artisan market. Just about every stall has the same touristy stuff--and very little of quality. There are a few stands selling fruit and a few stand on the perimeter selling so called hand made jewelry. There is nothing here worth going out of your way for.

Loved our stop here to explore this tourist market for about an hour. Some small vendor stalls are located outside and others are inside the inside the market building. Their is really something for just about everyone. We purchased several handicraft item here that were unique.

BOTTOM LINE: Well worth you time to visit this market for low cost handmade jewelry, alpaca hats, scarfs and clothing plus rock hound stones, t-shirts, jams, fruits, etc. On the second level are some additional shops and hair salons. The restrooms are upstairs for a nominal fee. The traditional magnets and other tourist souvenirs items can all be found here. MY RATING: 8/10.

NEXT DOOR is a fully blown USA style grocery store with loads of things tourist will appreciate. It was great to see a nice selection of USA branded snacks and sodas. We saw many of our fellow cruisers here stocking up, too. I paid with Chilean Pesos but not sure if they also accepted credit cards or USD.

I am a rock hound, knowing that in Chile, there are lots of mining in northern Chile, yet I was disappointed not to find good rock shops in San Pedro de Atacama.

When we got to La Serena, this would be our last chance to find any rock specimens. After one guide told me there are rocks for sell at La Recova. We went to the market to hunt.

There are many handicraft stores, restaurants. There is one rock shop outside the building. When we got there he has not complete set up the display yet, I just hang around as he took more and more verities of mineral rocks onto the table, some I recognized some not, he took out his encyclopedic rock book to show me. We talked in simple Spanish since he couldn’t speak in English. I had a lot of fun there and bought several mineral specimens. Even though I worried about my luggage limit, I still could not stop from buying.

La Recova is a tourist market place that must be visited if you go to La Serena. It is not easy to park nearby so it is advisable to leave your car at the main street, at the block were the church is before the church and La Recova Market. There you will find almost everything in crafts and... do not forget to buy "papayas confitadas"!

The La Recova Minicipal Market has a lot to offer from great local eateries to clothes stores and souvenir shops.

I recommend a visit even if it's just to walk around
