- laczkozsuDebrecen, Hungary2,431 contributionsBeautiful and uniqueWe took a one-day trip from Burgas (35kms) and visited this nice town, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. I agree, because it’s a picturesque town located on an island. It’s about 850m long and 350m wide. The Old Town consists of 100 traditional stone and wooden houses. They were built in 18-19th century. We were strolling in the narrow, cobbled streets and saw nice buildings, many shops and cafes. It’s a must-see site in Bulgaria.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 12 November 2023
- Victoria GLouth, United Kingdom99 contributionsHighlight of our trip to BulgariaThis place is stunning! Travelled with my partner and our 3yo daughter. We were staying in Sunny Beach which was perfect for my daughter, but this area Is much nicer for adults who want a more peaceful trip. We had lovely food, people friendly, some lovely shops and local artwork selling in the streets. Easy to get to from sunny beach by taxi only 30lev. Highly recommend at least a day trip here for anyone staying in Sunny Beach. We didn't have a tour but if we were visiting as a couple we would. So much history in this small area, very interestingVisited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 June 2024
- SocccaTolmin, Slovenia1,806 contributionsA charming old townWe stopped in this charming old town on our way from Varna to Burgas. Nesebar is a really nice town with lots of shops and cafes. And I noticed that toilets (toilets) are also very important in this town, as there were many signs indicating this.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 19 June 2024
- merseyblue-1Liverpool, United Kingdom1,215 contributionsWorth a visit.Worth a visit. It's clean and pleasant with places of interest all within a small peninsular. Plenty of little cafe bars or restaurants to chose from and some shaded quaint streets to explore. In my humble opinion, it's spoiled a bit by some of the shops but otherwise interesting stone/wooden upper buildings and views.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 June 2024
Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 July 2024

- T-SGlobetrottersPreston, United Kingdom4,097 contributionsAttractive old townWe stayed overnight here as part of a tour around Bulgaria. Compared to Sozopol, it is substantially bigger with a more established tourist infrastructure, but it is arguably more attractive. There are several Byzantine chuches to see, most are either ruins or museums but there are offers that allow discounted entry depending on how many you wish to see. There is a good bronze relief that shows the position of all 16 locations at the entry to the old town. Following these allows you to see the more untouched part of Nessebar away from tourist places. There are a remarkable number of wooden houses in these areas, far more in fact than in Sozopol. There is also a promenade walk you can take around the edge of town but as we were only here for an overnight stay, we did not have time to do this.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 September 2024

The old town is the best part of Nessabar. Little side roads run off, where you can get lost. A hundred or so small shops selling everything from local food and drinks, to knock off football shirts to paintings to cheap toys.
The place is fairly clean
If you or the kids need the loo, you have to pay to use a side loo at a restaurant.
No public loos or water fountains
A fair few "gypsy" women putting / tying bracelets on the young boys then grabbing them for cash.
Bus loads of tourists in and out all the time
The buildings are stunning
You could walk about for hours
But you do get a feeling the locals do not like the English much.
Seen it
Wouldn't visit again

The old town of Nessebar is on a small peninsula in the Black Sea which is linked with the mainland called New Nessebar, that's where we lived. But it took us like 10 minutes to walk into the old town.
It's one of the oldest towns in Europe and considered one of the best-preserved when it comes to architectural landmarks and buildings. Its really quite the romantic town with its small squares, narrow cobblestone alleys, and its beautiful two-story houses with the stone at the bottom and wooden upper floors.

The historic center of this town located on a promontory is heterogeneous in structure: next to ancient houses covered with wood there are others in reinforced concrete that create an irritating inhomogeneity. The tourist flow is very high and therefore everywhere there are bars, restaurants, junk shops scattered among the many ancient churches. Much could be done to improve the situation. After dark a beautiful non-invasive lighting allows you to better appreciate the place.

The old town of Nessebar is extremely well preserved. Here you can see many remains from the time of Byzantium, several interesting churches with preserved frescoes and icons from the Middle Ages. The narrow streets are full of restaurants, shops and cafes working at decent prices. The evening may be a little crowded.

What a beautiful spot. We loved wandering the small streets, go into the houses-turned-into-art studios and enjoying a few meals and drinks with a view.
Very easy to reach from Sunny Beach by bus (pretty much any bus, at 2lv pp) and quite frankly, só much nicer than Sunny Beach.

We stayed for a week in Sunny Beach ee went to see this must see place. It was around 30' by bus from our hotel. Not surprised it's a Unesco Heritage site, very nice old town. As soon as you go inside the walls you can breathe the history, see the buildings have the byzantine influence . A lot of shops and narrow pedestrian streets to visit in a few hours.

An artistic place with a lot to see. There are art galleries(free visit) everywhere around the streets of the old town. You can even buy a small painting as a souvenir. The architecture is really beautiful and there are some gorgeous sea views around the town. It’s full of restaurants and cafes. It’s a must see in the region.

Stunning place, so pretty. Buildings are gorgeous, and the view on the coast is to die for. A must visit if in Bulgaria. We got the boat over from sunny beach which was a bit expensive but a lovely way to arrive. Be careful, the boat says kids cost 15 lev but it's height not age dependent so be aware.

Thinking about visiting the old town one evening for some food, just wondering if anyone could recommend good non seafood restaurants at all?thanks!

Hi
I’d also recommend the Emona. Lovely food, great service, wonderful location overlooking the sea. Visit their website where you’ll find their menus.
I always go here for food when visiting Old Nessebar. As mentioned in the previous answer, they have a huge selection of non seafood dishes to choose from. Enjoy 😉

Just exactly how “cheap” is Bulgaria (sunnybeach/Nessebar)
We’ve never been before and don’t know anyone that’s been either but everything I’ve seen on google etc and reviews have all said it’s cheap as chips..
Guess I’m trying to say could I live comfortably on 500-600 lev for 7 days. I’m not a drinker either..
Written 26 July 2018
Hi Shelby, well! The current exchange rate is 2.20 Lev per pound or approx 2 lev per euro.. you can eat a main course every day for for approx 5-8 Lev and a pint of beer is 2.70 Lev. (If you were a drinker :D) 600 lev will be loads!! Use public transport/buses and local taxis. Avoid the yellow ones with the chequered logo.. they are way too dear.. enjoy your stay!! You'll have a ball it's really beautiful. 🙂
