Neighbourhood: Bela Vista

Known for its Italian cantinas, Bela Vista is the place to go for great pasta. Also called “Bixiga”, the area is an important cultural part of the city, with the bohemian and the religious costumes of its inhabitants on full display. In August, the large Nossa Senhora Achiropita party fills the streets with a variety of Italian food and music. You can experience the liveliness of the neighbourhood walking through the antiquities fair at Dom Orione Square or visiting the “Brazilian Caminito”, a version of the Argentinian street complete with colorful buildings. Bela Vista is also home to the traditional samba school “Vai-Vai”. Buy a ticket to a rehearsal and get a taste of what Carnival is like.

The Bexiga district was once home to the tens of thousands of Italian immigrants who arrived in São Paulo in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, like its New York counterpart, the overwhelming majority of their descendants now live elsewhere.

The Italian influence is still reflected in a number of restaurants, pizzerias and bakeries, festivals and a church called Nossa Senhora Achiropita. The streets are bedecked in Italian flags at festival time which attracts thousands of visitors. There is also a weekend flea market held in a square.

I would not recommend it particularly unless you are in town for a couple of days and preferably have a local person to explain things. It´s located less than a mile from Avenida Paulista and near the downtown area. Although it is a bit run down and dirty in parts, the buildings are refreshingly low after the monstrous skyscrapers in so many other areas.
