Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Ignore most the negative reviews, they are from old people who don’t appreciate modern art. It’s a small museum but with plenty of interesting pieces.

Free admission and cloakroom, the surrounding park is worth a visit too.

Located inside Ibirapuera Park, and accessible for R$7, Museu de Arte Moderna de Sao Paulo (MAM) features a fairly brief collection that is more Craft than Art. Occupying only one floor, and thus only requiring thirty minutes max, it is unfortunately in curating that the museum falls short ass several items are clustered together and subject to poor lighting. Fans of Modern or 'experimental' work should stop by, while those prioritizing their Sao Paulo schedule can probably take a pass.

The museum has an impressive name. I was sort of expecting São Paulo's version of New York's MOMA. Very disappointed. The museum is a small one floor affair. The work on display the day I visited was poorly lit and uninteresting. Please check ahead prior to visiting and make sure the show is of specific interest to you. If you just arrive not knowing what is on display you will likely be disappointed. There is a pedestrian bridge near this musuem that leads east to the USP museum. It's six floors of exhibits, free admission and a better art museum.

Placing an art exhibit in a park is a fun and clever idea, especially for a modern art display. Surely, this gives more people the chance to view and benefit. But the small size and limited art displayed defines this as individual exhibits rather than a museum. Which is fine, but easy to be disappointed when expecting a museum of modern art.

Located in Ibirapuera Park, the Modern Art Museum will not transform your appreciation of art or overwhelm you with piece after piece and room after room of magnificence. What it will do is provide you with an enjoyable hour or two with beautiful art, including fines pieces by internationally known artists, such as Renoir, and, perhaps more interesting, striking works by Brazilian artists of the same period (including Parreiras, Andrade Albuquerque, and da Costa).

We have become accustomed to late 19th century and early 20th century takes on European and North American portraits, city scenes and landscapes, but in this museum you will see comparable works from Brazil. This created cross-cultural appreciation for the similarities and differences that I found particularly intriguing and enjoyable.

On the ground floor when we visited, the museum had an environmental installation dedicated to the British “pop art” Bompas and Parr Studio which might have been more at home in the nearby Museum of Contemporary Art but was good fun nonetheless for young and old.

You won’t mistake this museum for the finest in New York, Chicago, Paris, London, Vienna and other global cities, but that’s not the point. If you appreciate art and you are in Sao Paulo, this museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art a short walk away across a pedestrian bridge will satisfy your desires.

The building is interesting architecturally but the exhibitions so-so. I fear that this is a result of the lack of government support that arts & culture are experiencing in Brazil. The collection is primarily Brazilian modern & contemporary. But for 6R admission (less than $2 USD), it’s worth a quick turn, even if just to walk through the spaces. And the gift shop is very nice. Lunch buffet at the restaurant w/coffee was 79.15R ($24.50 USD) and worth every penny. Drinks & dessert are extra, but the buffet is bounteous and unlimited.

You can't ignore the scent of new mown hay as you walk in, or the sounds from a range of installations. I do think the haystack was my favourite exhibit - if only because it took me two visits to realise there's a needle hidden in it, which would be a cliche if not for the scent evoking everything rural. Brilliant mix of archeological finds and modern echoes. Yes, you can eat the sweets in the low life disco - you'll have to go to see what I mean...

There was a nice street art exhibition when we was there. The place is small and so is the exhibition, so go if you are in Ibirapuera Park anyway.

It did not take long to view the exhibits in this museum. We were disappointed after having visited the Pinacoteca and the MASP the previous two days. However, the sculpture gardens nearby were fun and the nearby Museu Afro Brasil is terrific. If you don't have much time, skip this museum and go right to the Museu Afro Brasil.
