Housed in a stunning example of eclectic industrial architecture, the Mercado Municipal de São Paulo — nicknamed the Mercadão — has thousands of food items on offer, literally from soup to nuts. Lush tropical and temperate fruits from every season, choice cuts of meats and fish, and hearty prepared foods, such as the renowned and enormous mortadella (bologna) sandwich, complete the market's catalog of wares, all for sale in a boisterous, welcoming atmosphere. The surrounding area can be a bit sketchy, but the sights and flavors more than make up for the journey downtown.

The building is wonderful and one can not expect to have the market here offering all sort of foods and goods. We had lunch upstairs where you have a choice of restaurants that offer great food at low prices. Place is impeccable!

The Municipal Market was a lot of fun to pick spices and try all kind of tropical fruits. It's a an old fashioned market building with lovely stained glass windows which are best viewed from the second floor balconies. The fruits is as expensive as a local farmer's market in the States, but it is totally worth it!! The pasteis... More

It's very interesting to go to there and enjoy the place, the food and vibration. There are a lot of store selling fruits, which you can try and maybe buy one or two. It's not cheap, but the experience is amazing. There are place to eat local foo too. The most famous food is the "sanduiche de mortadela" (sandwich of... More

On the first level you can find fruit and fish to buy, but if you're interested in a good hearty unique meal, head to the second level where a strain of amazing restaurants await you. Must try: Mortadela Sandwich, which is a huge balony sandwhich using the traditional italian meat, and the Bacalhau Pastel, which is a special cod fish... More

For those who want to know a traditional place or buy food this is a good option. There are also several snack bars with great pasteis, codfish balls, mortadella sandwich and restaurants with varying prices. Mercadão as it is known is in the cereal zone where the former wholesale trade is located, example Cantareira street, in Paula Souza street you... More

Very nice! Variety of cheeses, ham, sausages, type of olives in many ways... Craft Beers, cachaças, olive oils, vegetables, pickled garlic and onions... a food paradise! Go early and avoid saturdays after 12:00, because it gets crowded!

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
To truly know São Paulo, you have to start at the old centre, full of history and landmarks with stories to tell. Get a taste of local food at the Municipal Market, and if you are brave enough, head to the crowded shopping street “25 de março” for cheap deals on a wide assortment of items. Beautiful buildings in this area include the Post Office Building, Luz Station, Pagé Gallery, Pateo do Colegio and the iconic “Viaduto do Chá”. If you find yourself amazed by the local language, the Museum of Portuguese Language is the place to go. Cultural centres, like Banco do Brasil’s, also offer a variety of entertainment options. Finally, if you fancy watching a Gregorian mass with organ music, stop by São Bento Monastery on a Sunday morning.
