Neighbourhood: Sé
Sé, which derives its name from Sé Square, is a central neighbourhood in historic São Paulo. Close by, the Law School, the Museum of the Court of Justice and the Metropolitan Cathedral offer inspiring architecture. If you are looking for cultural activities, head to Caixa Cultural and check the schedule. In the area there is a popular pedestrian street called “Rua Direita”, one of the first streets in the region, which today marks the crowded perimeter. Sé is a great area to explore during daytime, but use caution if visiting alone at night.

The Páteo is a central point in São Paulo and is worth it for its history and architecture and the surrounding area. Inside there are walls that are more than 400 years old from the old Jesuit school at the beginning of the city. Inside there is a museum and a small church (Chapel of Padre Anchieta). The church has no relevant works, constituting more of a set of relics of the churches and venerated saints. Inside there is a Museum, with pieces by Father Anchieta. The interior space of the courtyard is an oasis nestled in the heart of the historic and banking center of São Paulo. It's worth the visit and delving into history.

The first thing to notice about it is the wonderful monument right on the square. It is called "Immortal Glory to the Founders of São Paulo" and it is great to behold, certainly one of the most impressive, and my personal favorite, in the city. Upon entering, you will find yourself at a café, which serves excellent coffee. I have not tried much else, but the small pie I had eaten was good, and it looked very tempting for a more complete meal, specially once you note where the tables are placed, right in a peaceful garden. It is a great place to rest, read and write, and I did all of that while having that seriously good coffee, which made me very happy.
The museum itself is a small thing, but very interesting. The collection is composed of sacred art, specially in connection to the Jesuits; objects of daily use of the original school; personal objects of Anchieta and other members of his mission; preserved bone relics; and some papal items. The explanations and panels are simple and to the point, and you learn a lot in a short visit, both about the founding of the city, as well as the history of the Order. One hour is enough to appreciate everything, but I do recommend reserving a bigger time slot, as some pieces are really just nice to admire.
Next door, there is the main church, and Anchieta's resting place, which is a simple, yet very elegant and charming temple. Besides these two structures, there is the old crypt, now inactive - the space is currently used as an art gallery. At the time of my visit (Abril 2018), artist Nilda Luz had an exhibit based on the city of São Paulo, very enjoyable. There is also a library, unfortunately closed on Sundays, but outside of it, an original letter from Anchieta is on display, so it is worth checking it out even then! I do expect to return soon to enjoy the library properly though.

The historical-cultural-religious complex Pateo do Collegio belongs to the Society of Jesus, a religious order of the Jesuits founded in 1540 by St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556). The first Jesuits arrived in Brazil in 1549 with the mission to evangelize indigenous, natural earth, and to educate and spiritually comfort the settlers, European Christians who began the process of colonization of Brazil.

The city of SP started here. A museum and some "original" constructions can be seen there. If walking around the city center, one must stop by "Patio do Colégio".

It is absolutely gorgeous inside, with a choir boy who sings like a bird. The priest is also highly intelligent and wonderful to be around. This is the oldest church in Sao Paulo. Warning: The mass is in Portuguese only and it is advised to be respectful and to not photograph with flash, especially during the mass as the priest won't hesitate to remind you where you are.

Currently a functional school and Cafe, Patio do Collegio is a colonial styled Jesuit church on the site where Sao Paulo was founded in 1554. Culturally relevant and ever popular for that reason the grounds are extremely well-maintained, though literature offered only in Portuguese makes the story difficult to understand for those who are not fluent.

……… Visiting the school-yard as the name says is real-lii a privileged experience, to be standing at the same spot where the founders stood more than 465 years ago when there was probably nothing but jungle here. At that time the Jesuits built a straw structure here. Today there is the beautiful Portuguese Colonial structure that was rebuilt in the ear-lii 1950’s and by the sheer condition of the building it portrays the importance this site and institution still has on the people who frequent and still make use of it. The place and the grounds surrounding it is pristine and in mint condition and the simple yet impressive plague on the wall dedicated to the Apostle Paul by the Jesuits……On the day of our visit here it was a religious public holiday in Sao Paulo in honour of the celebration of “CORPUS CHISTI” so this venue was closed to the public as they were preparing for a Mass/Service as there was an Altar impressive-lii adorned for the occasion which was scheduled for later in the day, so we were unable to gain access to explore the inside and also see the museum of the city. On the same square just outside there is also the massive stone monument with an obelisk erected in honour of the first Jesuit-priest who administered to the people they came into contact with at that time. If you are in Sao Paulo this venue is a must visit place!......................

This is one of my favorite historical places in Sao Paulo. It marks the place where the city was founded. It's a quite church in the middle of the noisy downtown region. It has a nice a cafe and from there you can walk to other historical sites.

Pátio do Colégio (means School Yard) is a place where São Paulo's first Jesuit church, Basilica Jose de Anchieta, was founded in 1598. It marks the site where the city was founded in January 1554, when the priests celebrated the inaugural mass of the Jesuit school. What we see today is the replica, built in 1954 by the Jesuits which houses the Museum named Museu Anchieta, recounting the history of Church as well as Sao Paulo.
