Top ways to experience Praça Tiradentes and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Centro
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

We visited this historical square on the walking tour. It meant we got to appreciate the history of the place a bit more.

Based on the Centro district, it has an equestrian statue of Dom Pedro I.

Surrounding the area are many historical buildings and churches.

We had a more leisurely stroll later on.

This area started being developed in 17th century and, along the years, has received many different and curious names: "Campo de São Domingos", "Campo dos Ciganos", "Rossio Grande", "Campo da Lampadosa", "Campo do Polé", "Praça da Constituição" and finally, in 1890, "Praça Tiradentes", honoring the Brazilian independence hero, Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, most commonly known as "Tiradentes". A beautiful equestrian statue of Emperor D. Pedro I was placed, in 1862, at its center. Two active theaters - "Carlos Gomes" and "João Caetano" - are situated on its adjoining streets. At one of its corners, the former residence of "Visconde de Rio Seco", now houses the awesome "CRAB - Centro de Referência do Artesanato Brasileiro", a must-see at any visit to Rio. And not far from it, stands "Rua do Lavradio", with its famous bars and restaurants: "Rio Scenarium", "Casa Momus" and "Mangue Seco". Use taxis at all times, principally on evening visits. Remember it is downtown, at Rio's historical quarter and security conditions are not the most desirable ones. Enjoy!

Praça Tiradentes is a large and beautiful place in the center of Rio. In the middle of it what draws attention is the statue of Floriano Peixoto as an Almighty, subduing the indigenous population and representing some rivers in our country. But looking like a An architectural work, these statues are beautiful and worth a visit.
