Amazing hike but it's actually very hard....some parts I felt like I needed a rope...I went up without but saw people going up with a rope. Anyways, the views are amazing but the hike is something very hard...I mean I was kinda dying the next day.

Pedra da Gavea is an amazing experience! I love the hike so much I've been up at least a dozen times, maybe more - I've never bothered to count! You don't need a guide, as long as you find the start of the trail at a little bridge over a mountain stream just above Sao Conrado. Take sandwiches for when you arrive at the top and make sure you have drinking water. Most people sweat a lot through the tropical rain forest. You will see lots of butterflies and birds. You need to wear strong boots and be prepared to scale 3 rock faces. No good for those who are afraid of heights. If you plan to start at 8 am, you should arrive at the summit by noon! Amazing views of Rio, and the tropical rain forest and the Corcovado will look tiny!

Amazing view, excelent exercise. It takes +-3hrs for a medium group (4-8 people). Better go with a local guide.

This hike is no joke! It starts off like a walk in the park (because that's what the beginning literally IS) but then the relentless uphill path starts to take its toll. You'll feel your legs get heavy after 40 minutes or so of constant incline. About halfway up the mountain, there are various rock scrambles and obstacles like chain ladders and vine walks. Those are all do-able without prior climbing or bouldering experience, but you should be in good shape. Once you are about 80% of the way up, you'll need to be a good climber to scale the final section of the mountain. Some people bring rope for it. Bring a small, light pack with plenty of water, a snack or two, and be in good physical shape. Plan for 4-6 hours of very rigorous activity. I'm a mid-thirties man in good shape without significant hiking experience and I found this to be very challenging, but manageable (except the last part, which I could not complete because I was not comfortable with advanced rock climbing on a solo hike).

A must-to-do trip in Rio for the adventurers and those like me that wish to push your comfort zone. I lifetime experience made possible with my fellow hikers and our very experience Jalmir Brasil guide (Instagram - @bguiadeturismo). Cool light outdoor clothing, outdoor shoes, sunnies, hat/cap, sunscreen, lots and lots of water, cloves and a “Leap of Faith”. Main gate opens at 8am and closes 5pm. Last admissions at 2pm. Guide signs you all in at the post. We went off grid to explore a different side to access the mountain. Jalmir was always assuring us about the safety aspects of the climb. He touched on the history of the biggest urban jungle in the world and it’s habitants. Made us feel at ease with every stop along the way to catch our breath. Took us 4hrs to reach the top with amazing views of it’s surroundings including waterfalls and seldom seen side of the climb. We were the first on the top and were able to take pictures in private without the usual crowds. The descend was thru the normal route with stops to view the amazing and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Definitely, proud to push my limits and overcome my fear of heights thanks to Jalmir and my wonderful companions. Obrigado Jalmir.

I booked this trip and received a confirmation. However, the tour guide never showed up as described on the ticket. Really disappointed. I contacted the guide and he mentioned that the tour was cancelled. I did not reveive any cancellation / information upfront. Not professional and cannot recommend this guide. I hope to get my money back. Will be contacting you and Tripadvisor about this.

I'll start by saying this climb is mostly suitable for fit and sporty people, or experienced hikers. It starts with a kilometer or two of steep zigzag jungle trail, then lots of jungle stone steps, then plain old tree root climbing which then turns into full on rock climbing and eventually cliff scaling with a harness. Beautiful rewarding experience when you reach the summit and best Instagram pics ever. The guides are friendly and experienced. There is abseiling down from the summit. We managed to do it in 5 hours.

This hike was an amazing experience. It was without a doubt the most challenging hike I've ever done. But, I'm so glad I did it. The varied terrain along the way was beautiful and the views were out of this world. The vertical nature of the majority of the trail was more challenging than I anticipated and the group had to make multiple stops along the way in order for all of us to catch our breath. But, I loved the fact that there was climbing involved, including ropes and permanent cables attached to cliff faces. Not anything beyond the capabilities of most people, but, you must be in good physical condition to make this hike. Upper body strength is important on the way down as you often have to support yourself with your arms in order to lower your feet down to the next foot hold. Your legs will be jelly by the end. One of our hikers threw up several times on the way up. And another had issues with vertigo on some of the more exposed and cliff side trails at the higher elevations.

But, the views from the top are incredible and a great payoff for all the hard work.
